Sennheiser e614 for choir? |
|
|
I have a handful of ancient ( +20 years ) AKG C451 mics that I use for
choir, drum overheads etc.
Problem is that most of them are close to dead.. Some due to corrosion in
the preamp/capsule connection and some due to intermittant problems with the
preamp.
In other words : these mics arent fit for use anymore and it seems that
bringing them back to working condition is a waste of money..
Anyone ever try the Sennheiser e614 mics for choir ?..
How good is gain before feedback compared to the 451 ?
Any better options in the same pricerange? ( I need 4 mics and have approx.
1000 Euro to spend )
Thanks!

a hanging type choir mic should do a great job for you on choir. of those
that i have used i prefer the CAD CM100. you should be able to get 5 for
the price of one C451
i have never tried them on drums though :)

Hmmm ... one of my 452's has less bass than the other.

That may not be a correct estimate.

If you can get the AKG's repaired within that budget, then perhaps it is
the very best choice, if not then new version is only some DKK 3500 at
Aage. The only real alternative is IMO from DPA or from Schoeps ....
otoh, I just got me a pair of ADK SC2's as spares, just in case. I
wonder who repairs AKG here in Denmark now, I seem to recall that SC no
longer represents them.
Kind regards

According to the AKG website it's MUSIC INDUSTRI & AUDIO that's representing
them in Denmark now. www.mia.dk
Looks lika the Harman group is doing the same in Denmark as they are doing
here in Norway..... Channelling all their brand names through one
company.... (AKG, Crown, DBX, JBL, Lexicon, Soundcraft etc)

I agree that you first should ask AKG for a quote on overhauling the
mics.
Another alternative could be Beyerdynamic, their condensers are very
underestimated mics in my book.
I have a few MC 713. Tried them aside a set of AKG 451 in a studio
(overheads) and we couldnīt tell a difference.
The successor is the MC 910 which is reasonably priced and got very
positive reviews. One user in a German forum took them over a pair of
Gefell mics.
The Sennheiser shouldnīt be bad choice either, I just have no
experience with the e614. I have the MKH40, which is a great mic.

I'd need them to go on tall mic stands as this is for mobile use, not an
install - but that shouldnt be a huge problem... Any pointers for online
dealers in Europe?

Believe me... These mics are beat to death.. Its like with cars.. Once the
problems start coming up, they will never stop :-)... I used to have 8 of
them.... 3 of them currently work, but with intermittant problems..
Sometimes just tapping them with a drumstick works, sometimes you have to
swap them for something else..

I dont feel repairing them is an option with regards to reliability.. It may
well be the best option if I were to use these for recording, but I have
plenty of other good mics on hand for that..
The DPA mics are sweet, but way outside the budget range :-)..
It seems that you have learned the joys of ancient AKG condensor mics too,
since you bought spares?..
How does the ADK mics sound?..
AKG is www.mia.dk currently...

One of them has less bass than the other, it could be because I broke
the bass switch or it could be because the membrane is going according
to other traffic some time ago. I got the ADK pair offered privately and
bid DKK 800 for both unheard.

I have only tested that they work with a brief speach test wearing
headphones, I didn't record with them. Fairly bright, and they are
extremely blast sensitive. From the AKG C1000's I heard used for
mandolin and guitar pa recently their sound is - as much as such a
comparion with something heard over 901's can me made - generally in the
same style. Fortunately they come with a small windscreen, they are
probably good at defining the location of a classical vocalist as
supporting mics, which is their main intended field of use. Almost
nothing between membrane and outer world, possibly good for detail and
bad for blast sensitivity.
Thanks.
Kind regards

Oh, the band (Magiba) that got themselves a small handful of C1000's
were by me suggested to get E614's ... they are in fact on my list of
potential choir mics based on specs, but I have yet to listen to them.
Kind regards

Time to do a shootout?...
The 614 is pretty cheap and I could get4 and see how well it does... If they
suck for choir I could just move them to drums ( overheads and hat )
I tried the C1000 a couple of years ago and didnt like it..
I just checked the Thomann site for interesting condensors:
AKG C430
Behringer B5
Behringer C2 ( actually so cheap, its scary )
Beyer Dynamic MCE530
Sennheiser e614
Anyone have an opinion on any of these for live use ?

About to try the MCE530 for the first time. Bought 12 from Thomann to cover
large choir, along with rifle mics. Will give you my opinion in a week |

How many singers in the choir since you need that many mics ?
