Is there any quality difference between the two connection types? My AV
receiver and dvd player have both.

Yes, especially If your tv can support 1080i, 720p, 576p, etc then
there will be a massive difference. Even if its just a cheap 'n nasty
tv with component input it still will make a difference in terms of
colour and sharpness. I've seen it on a Dick Smith job, s-vid &
component is a noticeable difference, mainly in colour 'n sharpness.

Component can handle progressive scanning, HD resolutions whilst
s-video cannot.

Basically it goes in order of -

1. Composite <== lowest
2. S-video <== better
3. Component <== even better
4. DVI/HDMI <== best

First two can't handle HD resolutions or progressive scanning. If you
don't know what progressive scanning it, it basically relates to how
the image is drawn on the screen. Progressive draws the entire image in
one hit, whilst interlaced draws one half and then the other, your eye
sees it as one image because its done so fast. Progressive gives you a
much nicer more film like picture, but it only works if your TV
supports it.

Most decent CRT's support it. Along with LCD, Plasma & projectors.

What sort of TV are you using?

yes, there is difference between these.Currently, DVD Video native

format is component The order of quality on dvd so far is as follows:
Component format,Best, next best RGB - Scart (Euro plug) next S Video,
and last Composite video, the lowest quality. The situation is going
to change during the next few years, with a new laser standard and
other things. Try a Google on this if you want more information
