While doing some surfing on ebay, and browsing through some ELP
(Emerson, Lake and Palmer) stuff, I came across an ebay ad for an ELP
Laser Turntable.

Has anyone ever heard of this, and it this possible for a laser to read
a vinyl LP's grooves for playback?

Sounded quite interesting, that is until I seen the asking price.....
around $13K.

I'd be interested to hear if this indeed is not some sort of hoax, and
if something like this is really doable? TIA, Mark

Someone tried it... apparently it worked, sort of. Dunno about ELP being
involved with it.

I suspect that it is more "do-able" with modern laser focus and control
technology (CD players etc...) and the advent of really really really
really fast DSP and uProcessors, plus software algorithms that do things
like read surface data on the earth from satellites 22,000 miles
above... etc...

but alas, there's no *market* for such a thing!! :- (

It's true, and it's been around for years in one form or another.

ELP (the band) has nothing to do with it. ELP is also the name of the
Japanese company that makes the laser turntable.

IIRC Fremer reviewed it a year or so back in one of the high-end rags.

It's doable, and it exists. Was demoed at the Stereophile show in NYC last
May, just for one instance.
