Hello,
did anybody of you already benchmarked the Studio Projects SP828 against
other high/low end preamps. I' searching a good quality 8 in 2 solution
in that size (but not in the 5k prize range - my limit is 1500$)as a
frontend for an Alesis Masterlink for smaller live recordings. Should
match with a collection of Schoeps, MBHO and Neumann.

What other 8 channel preamp is (in terms of quality) on par with the SP828.

I used the 828 on a recording last night. I haven't started work on the
actual mix yet, so I can't really give it a fair review, but based on
the safety mix that I captured last night, it's going to turn out to be
a keeper. It seems to be quite a good sounding preamp for so little
money, and the limited mix capability worked well for me yesterday.
Don't expect any "magic", just a good clean signal. Preliminary
listening suggests that it's cleaner than the pres on my Spirit mixer
(which I like quite well, btw), but I don't have any really high end
stuff to compare it with. And of course, there's nothing blind about my
listening experiments, so you shouldn't put too much stock in them.

I used it to feed my HD24XR, which uses the same converters as the
Masterlink. We weren't using really high-end mics, though, as it was a
live performance. The only Neumann was a KMS105, which sounded great
through the SP828 - a little bright, but it's a little bright through
any preamp. Other mics used included an AT 4055 and an AT 4051.

In fact, I used some of the safety mix on my show this morning. You
could listen to it over our web archive, but frankly I'm sure that the
MP3 process would trample any nuances that you might hear in the
recording, so that's kinda pointless.

So I guess the best I can do is give you a vaguely positive report and
suggest that you get one from a dealer who will let you try it out.
