Good Day All!

I've somehow avoided using a patchbay for a good long while in my
project studio, but now my hand is forced.

I've got a Pro Tools LE setup with an RME ADI-8 8 channel converter, as
well as a Kurzweil Rumour (which I prefer as my A/D convertor for more
critical recording (Vocals/acoustic instruments).

I've just recently added a Crane Song STC-8 to the rack.

So, here's what I'm looking to acheive:

I'd like to use the STC-8 for tracking as well as 2-Buss mixdown
chores. What I've been doing so far (which is ridiculous, no doubt) is
taking a signal from my Neve 2 channel preamp into the inputs on the
STC-8, out from the STC to the ins on the Kurzweil unit. Tracking
nirvana as far as I'm concerned.

Then, when it's mixdown time, I have to go to the back of the rack, and
repatch. I now unhook the NEVE from the STC. I take 2 outs from the STC
to 2 ins on the RME unit, and 2 outs from the RME to the input pair on
the STC. Mixdown heaven for sure!

This moronic behavior has got to stop!

So my question is: Can anyone reccommend a solution to use the STC-8
for both tracking AND mixdown chores to be easily switched? Would a
simple XLR patchbay do the trick with absolutely no loss of resolution?

I'd love to just flick a switch and toggle between both setups
effortlessly and effectively.

BTW...I forego the Kurzweil for the A/D D/A hookup during mixdown
because I actually use the Kurzweil for it's intended purpose....as an
effects unit!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and answer my question.

First, a couple of "firsts:"

First, XLR patchbays aren't simple. There's no normalling, there are no
"pre-wired" ones as far as I know (jacks on the back as well as on the
front), and it's hard to find short XLR patch cables. Use a more
conventional patchbay.

First, what do you mean by "absolutely no loss of resolution?" Running
a signal through a piece of wire can cause measurable degradation. You
can never achieve what you're asking. Will you be happy with "won't
sound any different to me?"

If you want the most reliability from a patchbay, you'll want to use
one with long frame jacks. They're expensive ($400 and up) but they
don't snap, crackle, or pop.

You can think about normalling and do what makes the most sense.

Check out these links. I use Coleman Audio and Little Labs switchers and
they are awesome. They will do custom work if you want. The others I haven't
used but I thought you would find interesting :
