coaxial digital port directly to my hard disc without converting to
analogue

1) What hardware do I need for XP Home
2) What software do I need

You need sound card with a digital rca input. It's driver will treat it just
like any other audio input, so any software where the input device is
selectable will do as long as it can accept the data format (44K1/16/s or
48K/16/s). Which means pretty much all audio apps at all levels of
sophistication.

Laptop? Desktop? What kind of slots do you have available?
Features? Budget?
