TSN HD |
|
|
Has anyone in Canada watched hockey from TSN HD on an HDTV?
I was at a club last night that was showing the hockey game on several
Sharp HDTVs using TSN HD as the source.
It sucked so much, I am afraid to actually buy an HDTV and use cable as
the source, especially for sports. I don't know if it has to do with the
compression they are doing or what.
Has anyone else found this to be true or were the sets tuned poorly?

If I ever used a bar as my main decision making in buying a TV set, I'd
go back to silent film. It drives me nuts when I see TVs that are not
set up properly. |

Tim:
I get TSN HD via BEV. Last evening I watched Toronto playing in Buffalo -
the picture quality was stunning on my Hitachi 51S500. In fact all of the
NHL games that have been broadcast in HD have been crystal-clear. They are
still having problems with proper encoding of the Dolby sound, but it's
still an amazing picture, and a great way to watch sports.
There were some CFL games this season that were also shown in HD, and they
had the same great picture as well.
I watched some auto racing earlier today (the feed was from ESPN HD), and it
was very good to excellent.
Other networks such as SNET, FOX, ABC, and CBS, also do a great job of
producing sporting events in HD, so there are lots of options. Football
looks and sounds great, as did the World Series. But a lot of prime-time
dramas are also in HD (as well as Letterman and Leno) and they are real
treat too!
I don't know too many bars or clubs that do more than just turn their TV's
on and off. They don't care too much about picture quality.
You shouldn't let your experience in a bar or club frighten you away from
getting HDTV. Don't wait! Get HDTV now! You will be asking yourself, "Why
was I watching regular TV for so long?".
Once you see a proper HD signal displayed on a properly calibrated set with
a proper sound system, you'll know why.
Personally, I'm not a fan of cable, and switched to satellite not only
because I felt the picture quality was better, but because, at the moment,
Bell offers the most HD channels (plus, I got better value due to packages).
Good luck!

You have not watched sports on TV until you have seen it in HD. I watched
the Toronto Buffalo game last night on TSN and I found myself distracted by
how nice the picture was, if that can be said to be a problem. However, not
everything you see on TSN HD is in fact in High Definition. A lot of the
stuff seen night after night is Standard Definition broadcasts simply piped
through the HD channel. If the source is Standard Def, then your picture is
SD no matter what. I think what you saw the other night at a club was a SD
broadcast on an HD channel.

It was the same game you watched, wasn't it? Friday night, Toronto at
Buffalo on TSN HD. Were you watching it through Rogers cable or satellite?

Oh! I wonder if they compress their signal. I heard Rogers compresses
their HD signals but compress the demo signal (I assume that is the one
the stores use) less than most. That would, of course, make the picture
look better in the store. |

Thanks for answering Tim for me, Karyudo.
Tim: If you want a bit more info on Rogers, I suggest you take a look at the
forums over at:
www.digitalhomecanada.com
Lots of great topics and very helpful members.

My own experience with Rogers is that the HD signal can vary by source and
day by day. I don't think it has anything to do with Rogers but rather the
source of the signal. Some weekends the football looks incredible on CBS,
other weekends it's not so good (but still pretty good). I find that
Letterman looks better than Leno. Could it be that Letterman originates in
New York which is much closer to Ottawa than LA? I don't know, but the Leno
signal, if it originates in LA probably has to go through a few more hops to
get here.
