HD setup question |
|
|
I just got my Sony BR960 set but I have to wait until next weekend before
DISH delivers my HD receiver. Right now I am using my DISH 301 receiver. I
am receiving over the air HD signals from CBS and PBS, but I am wondering if
I am actually utilizing the HD tuner?? I got an S-Video connected from the
301 to the back of the TV, but I am not using the Component connection or
DVI connection yet...so am I actually getting an HDTV signal with the
S-video connection??? Next weekend, I figure the DISH professional installer
will have all the appropriate cables. I do get a nice picture on the PBS HD
channel, but I am connecting via the svideo.....not sure this utilizes the
HD Tuner ???? Any info appreciated.

You really are confused. |
What does the 301 have to do with "over-the-air" signals?!.
You need an outdoor or indoor UHF antenna to get OTA. And the only way
you see those is if your TV has a built in ATSC tuner.
And the 301 doesn't have an HD tuner, so you ain't getting HD channels
that way. So it doesn't matter what cables you have hooked up from the
301 to TV...no HD. |

Ok, I do have an indoor antrenna connected to my Sony HD TV which does have
a built in tuner, so I guess this is full fledge HD reception when available
over the air. Best station thus far is PBS when it does broadcast in HD. My
local CBS only occasionally uses HD, mostly evenings. PBS video seems
sharper overall.

You are watching standard definition TV. S-Video cannot deliver HDTV. |

"curmudgeon" is not one the more polite posters to this group, so you
can ignore him if you want.
Are you only able to get PBS and CBS digital broadcast where you live?
As for CBS, the scripted shows & Letterman should all be in HD along
with some/many of the Sunday football games (IIRC, CBS is only doing 3
HD games total on Sunday), some of the other major sporting events, and
one of their daytime soaps. The news and reality shows are not in HD.
Just in case you don't know about this site, try www.antennaweb.org for
digital stations in your area (ignore the crap about providing your
email address and check boxes for spam).
S-Video only carries a 480i signal. You cannot use the composite (the
yellow RCA connector) or S-Video for an HD signal. Use component, DVI,
or HDMI from the HD set top box so you can get all the SD or HD
channels. Also look into getting a digital audio connection for 5.1
sound if you have a 5.1 sound setup for DVDs.
Good luck with the Dish HD upgrade.

Re: HD setup question |

Thanks for the info. I can only get CBS and PBS over the air digital. In a
rural area. Interesting learning curve for HDTV. From the comments, I assume
the only HD signal I will receive until they bring the new HD receiver is
on over the CBS and PBS. The over the antenna is attached to the UHF-VHF
connector in the back of the TV and I assume connects with the built in HD
tuner, thus bypassing the s-video hookup?? But, the DISH sat channels are
using the s-video jack until next week and the upgrade. I got lots of
questions for the installer. I will be getting the 811 receiver and it does
use a DVI connect. Hell of a learning curve but its fun.

You may be receiving the HD signal, but sending it over S-Video downconverts
it.
It is only DVD quality. |
