CRT WS 4:3 Screen Geometry SUCKS |
|
|
To all those in the market for a widescreen HDTV: DO NOT GET CRT.
The imperfections present in the edges of 4:3 mode will drive you batty. I
spend more time in my TV's service menu adjusting screen geometry than I do
watching my extensive collection of DVDs. And when I do watch DVDs, I watch
the edge of the image more than I do the program content. It's gotten to
the point where I don't even want to watch anything anymore. If only I had
known about 4:3 screen geometry issues w/CRTs before I bought this
paperweight.
NOW YOU DO!!!

I had an Hitahi 46" CRT projection TV and I was very pleased with it. It
had a great picture, colour and black levels were excellent. The only thing
was that I always watched regular TV in Hitachi's stretch mode so that I had
no black bars on either side of the picture, in order to avoid burn in. You
have to be careful about that with CRT's. Otherwise it was an excellent set
and I sold it to my son who is now loving it. I replaced it with a JVC
HD-ILA set about a month ago and since burnin is no longer an issue, I watch
4:3 broacasts in that format now. Another great TV.

Funny, it took me less than 3 hours of tweaking to get my 38" CRT set
up for straight lines at the 4:3 border, and getting the 4:3 area centered
on the set. But, all that time was spent for 480p and 1080i inputs...480i
was just fine out of the box.

1) you mean YOUR SET has issues. that doesn't mean all CRTs do
2) You are nuckin' futs. "...I watch the edge of the image more than I

Two things:(1) how did you get your child to pay you for something? My child
expects me to pay for everything, and like a sap I am pleased to do so :),
and (2) you should not be watching 4:3. Have you not heard of HDTV. What
newsgroup do you think this is? (Sorry, could not resist...) |

Hey Z Man
My child is 34 and married with children. His wife who is a movie nut
wanted my old set very badly so if was her who overcame his slight desire to
take a pass on my two year old Hitachi. Since he bought it, every Saturday
night is movie night and tonight he had my other son and his girlfriend over
for a movie.
With the Hitachi I used 2 inputs for TV. One for regular 4:3 broadcasts
where I had the screen aspect in stretch mode, and the other for HDTV where
I had the screen in 16:9 mode. My new JVC is not subject to burn in so I
watch everything in full screen mode through the HDMI connection, which
gives me standard 4:3 broadcasts with black bars on either side and HD
broadcasts filling the 16:9 screen. Very nice. Looking forward to football
tomorrow afternoon.

When I bought my first big screen set five years ago, I deliberately bought
a 4:3. Although I watched DVD's in 480p mode, all my TV shows were in 4:3.
Since then, things have changed dramatically. I watch very few DVD's because
I get so much HDTV content. I am a big TV watcher, and spend a lot of hours
in front of the TV every week. All my shows are in 16:9 mode, since DirecTV
now carries NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox in HD, as also has Showtime, HBO, HDNet,
HDNet Movies, DiscoveryHD and UHD, all in HDTV format. About the only show I
watch is standard definition is the Larry David Show, which is on the HBOHD
channel but is shot in standard definition. I still have the 4:3 television,
but where all my shows filled the screen five years ago, they all have black
bars on the top and bottom now, and on the sides as well when I watch low
def.
While I still have my five year old television, my child, who is 29 and a
college student, has a Dell plasma HDTV. Guess who paid for it :) |

What brand did you get? Philips?
There are MANY decent 16:9 WS CRT RPTV sets.
I have no problems with my Pioneer Elite 710 64" |
