I'm leaning towards the Panasonic TH42PD50 vs. Samsung SP-R4212. Both are
EDTV's.

Any reasons (quality and reliability) to go with the Samsung model instead?

Thanks in advance for the advice...

Hi,

One thing I know, Panasonic, that particular model is most popular one
by sales stats in U.S. Can't go wrong with it.

I would recommend the Panasonic. Panasonic has had the best minimum
black levels of all the plasmas brands for years, which is much
preferred for watching any movie with dark scenes. The just released new
Pioneer models appear to have caught up with Pan for black levels & are
also very good, but Pioneer does not offer ED models and is pricey.
Panasonic is by far the most recommended brand by the AV buffs at
www.avsforum.com. BTW, if someone comes along and attacks you for
getting an ED plasma, don't pay much attention. The ED plasmas offer a
fine picture for HD channels & DVDs.
