I'm shopping for rear projection TV 60 to 70-inch. Someone suggested samsung
HL-R6168W. This TV has good reviews. However, I was dismayed to learn that
it uses a color wheel.
I have not kept up with HDTV technology, but I once read that 3-chip DLP is
better than 1-chip with color wheel. Is this still true? If so, which rear
projection DLP TVs use 3-chips?

Take a look at the JVC HD-ila sets. No color wheel no rainbow effect. |

Same for me too. HD-ILA has an excellent picture. Sony SXRD as well. Both
are LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) technology which is the latest in the
industry. I love my HD-ILA. The picture is very bright - like it was
produced on a huge CRT, but no scan lines and much crisper, no screen door
effect, in fact although I know the picture is made up of pixels, I can't
see them. The Sony sets are very pricey, ($5000 Canadian for a 50" set),
but I got my JVC for $3500 and it's 52".

Hi Peter,
Two things I think you should consider. First, a TV repair person in
this List stated a week or so ago that Samsung DLP HDTV's have had an
inordinate amount of trouble with failing color wheel motors. His
statement was something like - Samsung DLT's should keep TV repair
people in business for quite some time.
The other thing is that Consumer Reports is predicting that the price
of DLP rear-projection HDTV's will come down by $500 or so by spring
of 2006. I am also in the market for a DLP rear-projection HDTV, but
these two things suggest to me to stay away from Samsung and wait a
few months.
Good Luck!

That's about $25000 Canadian. :-) Seriously, that's under $3000 CAD. Very
good. For some reason companies ding us for more up here, particularly for
large appliances and cars. Could be that volume is a factor. Oh well, the
picture is great and we get a ton of HDTV up here. Looking forward to
football tomorrow.

I have absolutely no problem with the horizontal viewing angle. Vertical is
a problem but you only need to make sure its at a good viewing height. |

Nobody currently makes a 3 chip DLP for the consumer market but when worried
about the color wheel consider this - single source means absolutely no
convergence issues.
I have a Mitsubishi DLP RPTV and I love it despite some warped picture
problems with the fist one that I had to fight the retailer over. Picture
quality on both SD and HD is very good. I personally have never seen, nor
had any guests ever see the rainbow effect that plagues other viewers.
Best of luck with your decision!
