my lifetime Dtivo unit is on the blink (endless "almost there" reboot
cycle) after a recent electrical storm.
HD pair checks out OK. cleaned the power cable contacts to the
motherboard.
i think it might be a motherboard problem.
wondering if i swapping out the motherboard will cause me to lose my
lifetime, or of the lifetime info is part of the software image and
i'll be OK.
THX!

IN the case of a DirecTiVo, neither. On a DirecTiVo the lifetime service is
tied to your account.
On a standalone it is tied to an embedded serial number in a PROM chip on
the motherboard. |

As Seth indicated, your "lifetime" service subscription is not
associated with this particular unit; it's tied to your DirecTV
account. You can repair your current DirecTV DVR, replace it with a
new one, or even add multiple DVRs to your account.
If you swap out the motherboard (assuming that it's the problematic
component), normal operation should be restored, but you'll need to
select the menu option to "clear and delete everything" from the hard
disk drives (because each motherboard contains a unique serial number
that remains linked to the software installation until it's
initialized). Unfortunately, this means that your existing recordings
(all of which are encrypted for playback only via the current
motherboard) will not be accessible. |
