FYI: After hooking up my new tivo via telephone, I tried to set up the
wireless usb with my Verizon dsl modem/router. I ended up spending about 6
hours; the problem was with the wep encryption.

Actually, the first problem was with the wireless usb adapter that I bought
at Circuit City (a WUSB54GS, from LinkSys I think). It didn't work. So I
checked Tivo's list of approved adapters, and got a D-Link DWL-122 via the
internet. That started off fine - tivo detected the dsl network name - but
the setup couldn't be completed.

I eventually figured out that the wep was the problem; the dsl was using
alphanumeric which confused tivo. So I made both hexadecimal. Even then,
during the setup I had to remember not to select the high-lighted network
name; rather I had to click right to go to the next screen (to re-enter the
network name and then re-enter the wep code as well).

Now it works fine. Which is good; at one point I called Verizon's dsl help
line, and the guy there had never even heard of Tivo.

This is also a good reason for using those wired-to-wireless 'gaming
adapters' with a Tivo. You only need to tell the Tivo to use a wired
connection. You then use a PC to configure the gaming adapter to match up
with whatever wireless options are necessary. The Tivo does't even have to
be aware it's WEP, WPA or whatever else might come along. As long as the
adapter handles it the Tivo will 'just work'.
