Where to find used camcorders? |
|
|
I have been reviewing the traffic here over the past year in
anticipation of buying my son a camcorder to celebrate the birth of
their first child. A lot of people are recommending the used camcorder
market. But I haven't seen any posts on where to find used camcorders.
I checked the local camera store and they had one. Is eBay a place to
look? I am a little leery of using eBay for that.
I looking to spend up to $800 or so for something that would produce
good quality home videos.

Hi, |
for $800 I would strongly recommend you get a new camera. There are a lot of
dv cameras out there (for even 500 euros or something) that are still low
end, but capable of producing good results. You can't know if the used camera
comes from a honest seller, until you've received it, and it could be they
are selling something kaputt.Even the least honest store will give a
warranty IMHO, and it's completely different holding something no-one has
touched before... |

OTOH....I've recently bought a used GL2 on Ebay and look at it as, I've
saved $1000, and have a camera slightly over a year old that's had minimal
use and is probably in as good of shape as if I'd bought it new when the
original owner did. The key is to deduce the reliability of the person
you're dealing with....I look for a private individual who represents the
camcorder as in excellent condition with very little use and supports it
with lots of info and pictures of the actual item. Also with a proven
track record of quite a few sales and purchases. If they make mention that
they will include items such as a UV filter or a tape rewinder, it shows
that they have taken precautions against damage and wear of the item and
have taken care of it....With that being said, I've seen many obvious scams
and questionable auctions (especially in the camcorder catagory)....If it
seems too good to be true....It probably is!

I think those are good precautions.
I would add one other: check the actual sales -- not just the numbers.
I bought a $1,200 DVR last Christmas from an eBay seller that had
something like 50,000 sales and a 99.99% satisfaction rating. I did
not check the actual sales. If I had, I would have seen that they were
all $1-$5 items like costume jewelry.
It turned out that someone had hijacked a legitimate seller somehow
and sold several hundred $1,000 items and skipped. I got my money back
from teh credit card company, but it was a hassle.
With some precautions, very good deals can be had on eBay. But, as in
anything, there are risks.
