Whenever I try to play a divx avi in windows media player 9, the player
just freezes. Same thing happens with realplayer 10. When I try to play
the same video in the divx player, it gives me an illegal operation
error, an invalid page fault, and the number b00:c5457. I'm running
windows 98SE and have all the codecs loaded. I recently had to
reformate my hard drive and reload everything, and it worked before
that, so it seems like I'm missing something but for the life of me I
can't figure out what.

Have you tried using FFDSHOW? It won't use as much resources. It's worth a
try. I am using Windows XP home, and I briefly tried Media Player 10 and
remember having some issues with it. Instead of trying to figure them out,
I went back to Media Player 9 again.

I installed it at your suggestion, and it was no help at all. Any other
ideas?
This is really maddening. I can't play most of the videos that I have.

Did you try uninstalling the other codecs and enabling the libavcodecs in
FFDSHOW?

If the FFDSHOW codecs are active, maybe check your video and audio card
drivers. You said that you reloaded everything recently. Perhaps that's
where your problem may be.
