I've used both Studio 8 and Studio 9, and have experienced the dreaded
audio-sync problem. Studio 9 seems better at it, but that is a dubious
consolation prize when the finished work looks like a poorly dubbed kung
fu movie.

Anyway, has anyone tried Studio 10 in this regard? Any improvements?

Audio-sync problems are generally a problem of capture associated with
hardware, not the encoding application. Pinnacle is not alone in this.

I have been using a Pinnacle Movie Box USB for over two years now. It
does hardware mpeg encoding. For the first year I fought the A/V sync
problems with the Pinnacle Studio 8 version that came with the PMB. I
had cone up with many manual techniques to fix them, such as the
setting the scene capture to every 3 seconds and creating the .ifo/.vob
files from that. This seemed to force A/V resync every 3 seconds,
which was tolerable by deleting orphan A/V frames from the capture.

But VideoRedo was the saving application. It fixed all of my capture
problems. Now I capture with the PMB to mpeg, run it through VR, and
am then ready to do any post process editing. VR is a frame accurate
editor, and therefore my first choice here.

I still use my PMB for capture. Does a great job. Still use PS8. I
have suffered many of the same issues others have reported with this
unpolished app. Reinstalled, cleaned the registry, etc... Haven't had
too many problems with it for over a year, and still use it for simple
editing/titling/wipe tasks. I am looking for a new editor though. I
have ruled out Pinnacle, as I don't wish to replace my PMB and am well
aware that there will be no support from Pinnacle on version 10 working
with my two year old box. My current favorite to try is the Serif
MovieMaker 4. It doesn't have a trial, but I have had good luck with
Serif products in the past. My biggest problem is finding the time.

In answer to your original question though, I doubt very much that
Pinnacle has accomplished what VideoRedo has, the ability to remove
unmatched audio and video frames as a result of capture. This would be
a major accomplishment for this program, which is more of an I-Frame
effects editor than a capture/fix editor like VR.

Cheers...

I'm not too sure about this, I don't use Studio to do the capture. In

any case, I have started with perfectly synced mpegs and produce a
out-of-sync disc with it using Studio 8 and 9. Google searches and
Pinnacle's own forums show that I am not alone... :(

You certainly are not alone. Before VR many of us were in the same
boat. The time consuming slice and dice method was the only method of
fixing the problem available two years ago.

Try the 30-day version of VideoRedo ($50 to purchase) on your captured
mpeg before creating your DVD.

Basicaly:

Capture -> VideoRedo -> Edit -> Image -> Burn

If the mpeg plays in-sync on the computer, and out-of-sync on the DVD,
I am very confident the VR will fix the problem. The captured mpegs
will play in-sync on the computer since the computer will constantly
re-sync with the time stamps on the mpeg. But, if we demux and remux
the mpeg, it won't, since we have lost the time stamp and relational
placement of the A/V frames. This is what happens when we make the DVD
..vob files, we demux and remux. VR cannot fix an mpeg/vob that has
been demuxed/remuxed from the original capture.

I do not use PS for creating the DVD, instead of opting for TmpgEnc Dvd
Author too create the DVD iso/ifo files and then DvdDecrypter for
burning. But did I use TDA (and Dvd Lab) before discovering VR, and
that made no difference in the A/V problems. TDA and Dvd Lab both are
either easier to use and/or more versitile for what that I want to do.

Cheers...

VideoReDo is not much better than the crap on the market.

See the thread entitled "MovieFactory 4 broken again", and see if you
can figure out why that mpg is getting screwed up.

Which crap? Have you tried VideoRedo?

I and others that I respect on these boards have had very good success
with it.

I do agree with your boycott Sony though. But I have been boycotting
them for a long time.

I too have had success with VRD in the past. It corrected a 1/2 second
audio sync problem that had been plaguing me.

The first Sony product I bought was a Trinitron made specifically for
studio applications. It was broken. I had to pester the Sony rep to
ger me a new one and when he condescendingly brought it over, he told
me that Sony was well aware of the problem and had labeled the fixed
models with a green dot on the box. The box I had did not have any
green dot. Ever since that experience it has been downhill. I remember
the time I bought 10 floppy discs for my new 1.2MB drive. All other
discs I had used in that drive formatted successfully. Not one of the
Sony discs would format. The coup de gras was recently when my
impetuous son raced to the local wholesaler to buy a Sony DVD burner.
I warned him but he would not listen. Over the course of 9 months he
produced at least 100 coasters with just about every media imaginable
- nothing worked. I just got done throwing out another 50 discs that
won't read after a 6-9 month time. I contacted Sony and they told me
they did not support "OEM" drives. I got pissed and got the wholesaler
to trade me an NEC 3540.

I despise Sony with an intensity that I cannot describe in mixed
company. I have this seething rage for Sony that is bordering on
homicidal. I want so very much to see them lose their entire American
market. If I went to Conn's, which is a big Sony retailer, the place
would look like Hiroshima after the bomb when I got done.

Now, if you really want to know how I feel about Sony, give me a call
at 800-SONY-FOAD.
