wireless monitor on the cheap |
|
|
I haven't tested this yet, but I'm going to try it. I'm sure there will
be some sort of interference problem or hum.
I've got one of those FM transmitters that you can plug into an MP3
player to play through your car radio.
I've got an MP3 player with a radio.
I need an AC to USB power source to power the transmitter.
Tune the MP3 player to the correct station, throw on some headphones,
and listen, or not.
Transmitter - $20
Power source - $4 lowest I've seen.
I'll see.

I doubt that the transmitter will have enough power/range to be useable. |

I use it in my house all the time and it works fine for distances of 20
feet or more. For my intended use, we're only talking about a range of
5 to 10 feet max. This is just so I can hear what's coming out of the
mix without being tethered.
It will all depend of hum generated by power supplies, etc. |

IF it works for your application you're still missing one
component that the better units have and that's limiting.
YOu might want to run that mix through a damned good brick
wall limiter before feding this transmitter just to protect
your ears. I won't run headphones or iem type monitoring
for live situations without it for any performer. In case
of accident you'll be protected from transients that can
really mess up your ears.
By the time you find good limiting to go in front of it you
might just be better off with a pro grade setup. Frequency
stability of this thing might be a concern to me as well.
wHat instrument do you play? IS it wireless as well? IF
not then I'd say you really don't need to go wireless and
that can save you some money. A good headphone amp can give
you what you want if you can handle the tether but still a
limiter in front of it is a must.

I play fiddle and cajun accordion. Neither wireless.
Do I just look up "limiter"? |

Brick-wall limiter....got it. I thought that was just a colloquial
description at first. |

The first wireless IEM rig toured by Stevie Wonder worked with Sony FM
Walkman receivers on the FM broadcast band.
That system was the inspiration for Chris Lindup et al to start Garwood
radio systems and for radio mic manufacturers like Shure and Sennheiser to
copy the idea.
Oooh aaaargh, there be transmitters available if ye be a lookin.

Just be aware that firing up such transmitters may interfere with your
local legislation. Better check that out before you buy.
Around here youŽd get a fine from $750 up for firing up a FM
transmitter without having a license.

As someone pointed out this weekend, "Pieces of Nine" would be more
believable as a parrotty error, since it's a single-bit failure. (And
believe me, you don't want to get bit more than once by a parrot.) |
