Im transfering video through my camera and a firewire cable. I first
used Adobe and then tried Windows Movie Maker and they both seem very
grainy. When I hook it up to a tv with RCA cables its just fine. Is it
normal to loose that much quality when transfering them to computer?
Even with the DV-AVI setting it looks like this. Im really disapointed
because I expected high quality video. Is there a setting on my
dcr-cd-21 sony camera that is wrong? Help please!

You don't lose any quality when doing a transfer of digital video via
1394/firewire. It is a straight bit-for-bit copy. More than likely it is a
display problem on your computer.

When you say through your camera, you mean through the lens, or a tape
or passthrough from another source?

That wasn't the question. The question was whether
the video is coming from playing back a tape on the
camcorder, or whether the video is coming from
somewhere else and you are just using the camcorder
to "digitize" the video.

Since you can see ok on your TV but not on computer, it sounds like
you are recording interlaced. If you have an option on your camcorder
to record progressive (non-interlaced) try a recording using that and
see how it looks on your computer. That will give a clue.
I can't recall what a interlaced signal to my computer looks like
because I always record progressive.

Ive looked everywhere and in the cameras manual. There is absolutly
nothing about interlaced or progressive. I bought a new card and a new
cable and it still does it. Its not really distorted or screwed up, its
just more pixilated and low resolution like when you watch a lower
quality movie online. Its also not my video card...I have a nice new
video card and Ive burned the movies on to cd and its still grainy when
watched on tv.

Can you put a few seconds of AVI (or at least a couple
of frames of JPEG) online so we can see what you are
talking about?

Yes, I will do it this morning in a couple hours. I really appreciate
you taking the time to help me out. Im literally at the point of just
selling the camera or burning it in my back yard this is so
frustrating. By the way, I have a pentium 4, 3.6ghhz with 2 gigs of ram
so its not my processor I dont think. I also have a nice 256mb video
card.Tried also doing it with two different hard drives. From reading
old posts Ive seen about 5 or 6 other people with an identical problem
and none of them ever got an answer so Im hoping this doesnt go the
same road.

Only high-end camcorders have progressive modes. How are you capturing? If
you are using the USB port, instead of the 1394/firewire port, you'll get
the results you've described.

Nope, using a firewire cable. And I have used two different cards and
cables....same problem.

How does the video look when you export it back to tape and play in a
television?
