22" woofer. 6.5" voice coil. 900 oz magnet. 6000 w RMS.

Now that looks like a pretty respectable subwoofer. An Xmax of 2.5". Not
bad! But they have little available in the way of specs, such as
sensitivity
@1W. Even if it's only 91dB, that's close to 140dB at full power. That's
the
kind of thing I would design if I had the manufacture capability. Price
is a
bit extreme, but if you're going for no-compromise, I suppose this is
the
current champ.
Where did you find the Xmax ? I looked but didn't see it.
I'm afraid you're mistaken about your SPL calc btw. It would come to ~
130dB. (
which is what the PD drivers can do )

Read the 6th bulleted item on the above page:
"6.5" voice coil with a flat wound, long-excursion design incorporating 2.5"
of x-max and 17 AWG high temperature aluminum wire "
Let's see.. I didn't figure in power compression, so let's be generous and
say it's about 2dB.. so if we start with 91dB 1W/1M, then that's 101dB with
10W, 121dB with 100W, 131dB with 1000W, 134dB with 2000W, 137dB with 4000W,
and 140dB with 8000W. They claim it can handle 12,000W peaks, so that should
take care of the power compression..
I'm currently getting 139dB @50Hz from a pair of EVX180Bs in a vented box
with mutual coupling. Bigger box, but a LOT less costly than the MTX. :-)

Although an impressive driver (I use one in my studio rig) it is far from
brand new and has had it's ass handed to it buy many different, more
modern
drivers. I have never found a PAIR of drivers produce as much as SIX,
it's
a cone driver not a servodrive unit :) If this were true this would mean
that ONE X-array Xds would pummel 3 SB180's.... That just does not happen
:)Please take note of the aurasound and mccauley drivers used in such
designs of the bassmaxx and others, these are great woofers, albeit
pricey.
Again I'm not dissing the EVX180B but it's time for EV to jeep up in
retrospect to JBL, Mccauley, Aura, and even Peavey with the Lowrider 18.

I was comparing one cabinet (vented, sharing common port for mutual
coupling) with six E-V 18B woofers in four cabinets. The one dual EVX180B
system was producing a similar level of bass output, as measured from 20'
away, as the array of E-V 18Bs.
Depending on your definition of 'new', as a longtime user of the 18B since
1979, I consider anything that popped up in the past 4 years to be 'new'.
If you can find a better raw driver that is available in the US and can be
bought in quantities less than 1,000 pcs, I am very interested in buying
several and testing them. At the moment, the 180B is the best, most
efficient raw driver I could get my hands on.

You accidentally added a spurious 10dB when going from 10 to 100W. Should be
111dB @ 100W... etc. So ~ 130dB max.
You think 2dB power compression is being generous btw ?

The 18sound 18LW1400 is a good buy. |
We have plenty of EVX180Bs to compare them with, and they cost about the
same as an EV recone.
B&C and Beyma also have good 18s, used in Nexo and VDOSC. |

18sound seem interesting.
I've seen their drivers in dB active speakers btw.

I believe they are finally making chassis drivers for sale once more ( after
their involvement with Mackie / Loud ).
