nuendo 3 and protools for audio editing, opinions? |
|
|
long story short. i used to use PT with an 001. hated the sound of it.
got an RME fireface 800 (much better) and sonar. sonar may be great for
midi but protools is way better (has better features) for editing
audio. in sonar there is no way to delimit a track by selecting
transients unless you zoom to them yourself! i was spoiled before. this
feature alone will cost me hours of lost time.
so i started asking around for a programe with some or all of PT audio
editing features and nuendo came up.
a) what do people think? is there anything else i should look at that
sounds good and has great editing for audio? some midi capability is
cool and one day i might use it, but i'm really about tracking/fixing
performaces.
b) is this thing really 2 grand?!! fudge.

The object-based editing capabilities in Samplitude/Sequoia really are
hard to beat. |

Yeah, I get your point with efficiency and not knowing what's great for
your particular needs until you spend tons of time with it. I don't
know how much of a 'pro' I am, but I like Nuendo - I think it's equally
fast (for editing) as compared to PT. There is definitely a
'snap-to-zero' feature, as well as being able make a track into slices
based on transients (one track at a time though). I also like the
differentiation between group tracks and folder tracks, as well as the
ability to mute different layers of automation. What DOES piss me off,
is not being able to send the output of one FX channel to another (for
example a delay to a reverb).
Like you, I also didn't like Sonar very much, even though I did use
cakewalk quite a bit a few years back. I haven't used samplitude or
logic pro enough to comment on it. I also know that I don't like
Digital Performer as an audio editor cause group implementation sucks.
The math...I dunno how much of it is leftover baggage from the time
when DAWs were in an embryonic stage, how much is a bunch of "I think
it ought to sound better because it's 10 times more expensive" and how
much is actual difference. It would be borderline impossible to ABX
this stuff...I started critically listening somewhere around '98 and
never concluded that I heard a definite difference. That's not to say
it isn't there, just not in my experience.

is a tab to transient feature in nuendo? snap to 0 is a bit different.

Not a tab to transient - there's a way to slice a track based on
transients in the sample editor mode (semi)automatically, but there's
no way to navigate the track view by tabbing to transients on a
selected track as far as I know.
