Monitor or T.V. |
|
|
A Panasonic TH-42PD5OU is an enhanced definition plasma T.V with ATSC/NTSC
tuner. This enables the set to acquire inputs from an antenna.
However, a Panasonic TH-42PM5OU is essentially the same set without the
tuner for $200-$300 less.
I don't see the need for the more expensive set if I never intend on
connecting at antenna to it.
Thoughts?

If your sources will only be a DVD player, cable box or external tuner of |
some sort, then yes, you don't need the built in tuner. Keep in mind that a
cable card requires a built in tuner, but a cable box doesn't.
I suggest you seriously consider a real HDTV and not a EDTV. You won't
regret it once you tune in HDTV programming and when DVD goes HD and the
format war is settled with one format winning or the formats coexisting.

What is a cable card?
As for the sources, I will always either have a dish (first choice) or
cable. As far as I can tell the only time you would need an internal tuner
is when you were receiving signals from an external antenna.
If I went to HDTV I would have to replace my Tivo, DVD player and Dish. I
compared the difference between the ED and HDTV and while the HDTV was
impressive I think the ED is better value for the money. |

A cable card is a PCMCIA type of card that fits into a specialized slot on
some HD televisions. Presently, cable cards are receive only, and can take
the place of a digital cable box allowing you to subscribe to premium
channels without needing to rent a converter. In future, cable cards will
be two-way and will support advanced digital cable services like Video On
Demand. The cable company supplies the cards and authorizes them for use on
a subscription basis. The best thing about them is you get to continue
using your own remote and often there is no rental fee. Wall-hung flat
panel sets benefit from a clean looking install. The down side is some
features supplied by a cable box will not work, like VOD and perhaps a
program guide. Two-way capable cable cards are just emerging, but the
television must support them. A one-way card slot on a tv cannot be made
two-way simply by changing cards.

No you wouldn't have to now. All HDTVs are fully capable of displaying SDTV |
and then HDTV if you get that capability later.

I meant to take advantage of HDTV signals I would have to replace other
components in the system. |
