Panasonic TH-42PW4 Not Responding to Remote |
|
|
My Panasonic TH-42PW4 monitor no longer responds to the signal from its
original remote or my universal remote. The light on the unit flashes when
a remote signal is sent but nothing else happens. A Panasonic-authorized
technician examined the unit and speculated that there is a chance it could
be the remote sensor (around $200 to replace) but that it is most likely the
"main control board" (around $1,000 to replace).
As you can imagine, I am a little hesitant to blow a grand on an EDTV unit
that is almost four years old. Fortunately, we can turn it on and off as
well as switch inputs using the on-panel controls. It is, however, in need
of a brightness/contrast adjustment and the only way I know how to do that
is by using the remote.
Anyone ever hear of this happening? Is there a used parts market where I
might be able to get the parts I need? I would suspect, as this is an old
model, there are probably a few units (especially commercially use ones)
with bad or burnt-in screens but otherwise working electronics.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Weak batteries.......
Remote LEDs may flash, but IR power is to weak to communicate...
Dirty or dusty ID window on TV or Remote.....
Try a different remote with Panasonic ID lingo set up.... |

With a good DMM or scoping the data information from the IR Receiver to the
Microprocessor, the tech should be capable of determining if the pickup is
damaged/defective or if there is something on the main board is causing the
problem. Since the Led on the front panel is flickering when remote buttons
are being pressed I would presume the pickup is functioning and the data is
getting to the Micro. Otherwise the information for the Led to Flash would
not be getting to the Led or it's control circuitry.
| Quote: | The Microprocessor has to receive the data, process it, and send the
commands to the Led and it's control circuitry to have the Led Flash in
response to any remote input signal. Therefore the Pickup is functioning,
the communication lines to the micro are operational, and from the micro
to the Led indicator circuit are operational. However it is apparent the
Microprocessor does not know what to do with the information supplied in
the data codex form the remotes. Suspect maybe the E-Prom got flacked, and
therefore the Micro has no information regarding handling the information.
IMHO probably require the main board or at least in-depth (Bench Level
Diagnostics) of that circuitry. Panasonic may require these sets be
serviced on a board level, requiring the service company to do a "Black
Box" repair rather than discrete components.
