Any advice on plasma televisions larger than 50 inches for around
$5000? I like the panasonics but the price jump from their 50 to 65
inch is a bit much. Thanks

Multiple choices including Phillips, Sony, etc. You are correct in
mentioning the moderate differential in cost as the display gets larger.
Mush of this differential is the actual cost of producing the larger panels,
the additional cost in handling and shipping from the producers, most in
the Far East. The Panasonics are a nice set, have seen good reports from the
manufacturer and consumers regarding their products. Shop around, especially
at the big box stores (C/C, B/B,Etc.) and negotiate your best price after
comparing multiple items, don't just drop the quid on the first item you are
enthralled with.

The price tends to go up quickly for plasmas larger than 50". The main
reason has been the small volume for really big plasmas and the
production yield for screens that big. The prices for the 60" plus
plasmas was in the $20K to $25K range (and higher) just 2 years ago, so
prices have come down by quite a lot.

I think the only >50" brand name that might just fall into your budget
limit is the 55" Hitachi. I have seen the 60" LG severely discounted
down to near your price, but that was a close out sale. The 63" Samsung,
the 61" NEC/Pioneer models are above your limit.

The current 65" Panasonic commercial model can be had for around $8500
online. A lot of people are waiting for the true 1080p (1920x1080 pixel
screen resolution) 65" Panasonic and 61" Pioneer models to hit the
market, reportedly sometime in early to mid-2006. But the 1080p models
will likely command a premium for some time.

If you want a 60" size plasma, you may have to raise your budget to 7
to 8K - or wait a year or so for the prices to fall to within your budget.

I strongly recommend that you consider a "G-series" JVC D-ILA rear
projection set as an answer. I'd stack up the picture on mine against any
plasma, any time. Be wary of simple comparisons in stores - plasmas are
often cranked up to have punch under bright store lights. It's how they look
at home that counts.
