Betamax video machine to PC hard drive |
|
|
Any hints tips on how to get started. A friend wishes to transfer all
his Betamax video tapes to 'another format' and eventually I suppose to
DVD. Without thinking I suggested copying first to the hard drive of
his (new) PC, then after thinking I thought HOW??
No scart, in fact I am not sure WHAT output capabilities are on the
back of a Betamax machine ...if any, and what software will be needed
on the PC.
Anyone done it??
TIA

I did it a couple years ago with a Canopus ADVC-100. That left the
video in DV format (about 13GB per hour) on the HD. I used the
TMPGEnc encoder to convert that to DVD-compliant MPEG files.
Following that, an authoring program is needed to create a proper
video DVD (some authoring programs will also do the encoding).
It would be easier to use a standalone DVR. If you get one with a
hard drive, it makes an excellent VCR replacement (better than any VCR
ever made), and it makes the process of transferring video tapes to
DVD pretty quick and painless. I have several Pioneer DVRs which I
like. Panasonic and Toshiba (and others) also make them. There is a
very active web forum about them here:

you will need to buy a few adaptors. I assume the beta has a video out
socket in bnc format and audio out in phono. But you'll need to look
and post the model number of the unit for a specific answer.
Anyway, I'm assuming here...in which case buy a bnc video plug to rca
phono lead, and a standard phono to 3.5 mil jack cable for audio.
Assuming your pc has a composite video input on its capture card!
the audio you connect to the sound card and control via the aux input
in 'volume control'. I have used Avermedia DVD Ezmaker but not much,
seemed adequate, cheap unit you pay more for better ones, but i suggest
getting a dvr hdd recorder as the other poster has suggested- lots
easier. then it's like copying from vcr to vcr.
