Can you copy more than one program at a time?
I know it's slow but can you copy several at night
and can it copy while recording?
Thanks : -)

I believe if you select more than one it queues them up.

Is there much to do to get the Tivo compressed files
into something useable on a pc?

Yet another plug here to hack your box. Copy hour-long shows in under 10
minutes and you can easily end up with .mpg files (MPEGII) on your desktop
to do whatever you please with. I use SmartFTP which can queue up however
many shows you want (does them in series but can do them at night if
that's what you're looking for).

I'm sure; I've queued up and transferred a half-dozen shows at a time.
It uses the same mechanism that it uses to queue up shows for
transfers between TiVos.

I would like to do this. I have a series 1 and would have to buy a
2 to get Tivo to go, unless I'm mistaken. You make it sound easy
but this is about a hardware thing too, right? Or a Linux learning
curve? I just don't have time, althoug it sounds like a fun thing. |

series 1's can be hacked. You can buy ethernet cards for the series 1's
(www.9thtee.com). If you opt to buy a series 2 instead, you still have to
buy an ethernet card for those, it's just external instead of internal.
The hacking process is mostly a software thing. The hardware part is
taking the harddrive out of the TiVo and putting it into a PC. Once in
the PC, you add software to the harddrive such that when you move it back
into the TiVo, you now have added capabilities. It's not especially hard
but it's not especially easy either.
It does take some time to get it done but once done, it doesn't require
any work. You simply end up with a TiVo with more functionality.

Can I put the drive in an external USB or Firewire box? If I screw up is
there a way to start over with standard TIVO software. I guess I can back
it up before playing with it (duh : -) Can it all be done without getting into
Linux type stuff? I saw an article about this but can't find it.
Thanks again.
Oh yeah and can you tell me how to set the buffer to one hour? |
