I have an oppertunity to get a nice system with smoke and flame for a
good price, but I no nothing about these products.
Have any of you used them? Do they have advantages over final cut or
premier?

Ok. Depending on which version you are talking about you can not compare
Smoke or Flame to Premiere. They are two different worlds of apps. While
Smoke and Flame are indeed professional, extensive tools.. they are so
different that you can not compare them. Premiere, an excellent editor,
evolved from a toy to what it is now. Smoke and Flame started out as very
high end tools for comositing, etc.
That said, these may be worthless for what you are trying to do. If you are
not already doing broadcast / film compositing you probably should pass.
Esepcially if they are very old, running on completely outdated SGI
hardware.

Smoke and flame are the top compositing programs used for making high
end commercials and they are aleo used extensively in film. They are
not editing programs in the sense Premiere is, they are more like turbo
versions of After Effects, if you're looking for a comparison. They
have a little cousin, Combustion, that is priced where mere mortals can
afford it.
if it's a good price, and you get the license and updates for them,
yes, it would be a great value. If you do high-end graphics/special
effects/compositin work. |

I second that. You might be very disappointed with old SGI hardware and |
get better bang for yor cash buying new PC/Mac hardware.
SGI are also up shit creek without a paddle having just been booted off the
NYSE. I would steer clear as unless you have a very particular need for
smoke and flame you might get better value and functionality from the likes
of Avid, Adobe or Apple.
I personally wouldn't buy into SGI hardware even their new stuff and
certainly not old stuff.
Dar, what versions of hardware and software are you thinking of buying? |

Digital Fusion is also pretty cool for compositing if that's what they
need. Personally I much prefer the node-based design to Combustion's
design, I haven't used Smoke or Flame but presume the interface is
similar to Combustion.

Yeah, much as I liked working on SGIs ten years ago, a modern PC or Mac
is almost certainly far faster than an old SGI.

Combustion does have a schematic view which can be used in much the same
fashoin as DF. |
