Will upgrading to a portable headphone amp make a noticeable difference
compared to my Nad C352 integrated amp? I'm looking at ones that sell
around 100-150, such as Go-Vibe, portaphile, etc.

Thanks

For the most part, this is a downgrade and not an upgrade.

Probably, if the dedicated headphone amp is something forced to operate
off a 9V battery.

Why are you intersted in upgrading?

Not loud enough?

Don't like the tone quality you're getting?

Don't like the sound of music inside your head?

I mainly want to use it with my Sony CD player when I'm away from my
stereo system, and I was curious about difference.

I don't think so. I use a Raven Labs PHA-1, which is discontinued, but a
lot folks seem to like the Cafe Walter HA1, which is designed for bass
players to practice with a CD or other input. It should fine as a
portable headphone amp.

You are using high impedance headphones. If you used low impedance ones
(around 32 ohms) your Sony portable would be able to drive them to about 10
times the output, which would sound at least twice as loud.

And battery-powered headphone amps won't have any easier
time of driving Hi-Z headphones than your CD player.

My opinon is that HD 600s are great phones, and for some
people they can work out well with just the headphone jack
on a plain old CD player.

The most likely problem is that they won't be loud enough
because of their high impedance. If they don't get loud
enough you need something that puts out more voltage than
most portable CD players, which are limited to less than 3
volt peak-to-peak by the fact that they operate straight off
of two 1.5 volt cells.
