My Sony camcorder plays Digital 8 as well as analog tapes. I want to
transfer both types of recordings to DVD on my PC.

Does anyone know if these cameras play back via the 1394 port with
analog tapes, or just with digital tapes?

I was hoping I could just install a firewire card (Pyro Basic DV etc.)
to do the capture for both types. Otherwise, I'll need to get a card
with analog plus 1394 inputs.

If it's one of the Dig8 models that are backward compatible - not all of
them are - it will play the analog 8/Hi8 out through any of the ports
including the Firewire/I-Link.

Which means that any tape your camera will play (analogue or digital) will
be converted to digital in the camera and will be readily captured via a
Firewire port. At $15 or less or a Firewire card, that would sure be my
choice. The resulting files will be DV-AVI ready for editing in any of the
popular software, including the free Microsoft Media Producer (not sure of
the name an no time to check now).

Hope this helps.

Many (most?) D8 camcorders will play 8mm and Hi8 also
(via the Firewire/"i-link") If you have provided a real model
number it would be possible to provide a real answer. Don't
assume that any given model will do this unless you check it
out specifically.

It turns out mine is a TRV730 (circa 2002).

I'm going to pick up an IEEE 1394 card for my PC and get an I-Link cable.

Now, which software to master DVDs????? :-)
