My Panasonic DMR-E50 has had a lot of problems recording and reading
unfinalized discs. Before it would go into some kind of emotional
withdrawal and display only the input channel (L1 etc). Now it won't turn
on at all. I recorded a movie last night and it seemed to work fine. It
started recording a second movie on the same disc and became autistic again
and now is in a coma. I guess it doesn't like Jackie Chan movies.

I tried the "hold the power button on for 10 seconds" trick and that is not
working with this problem. Any idea how I can get it to turn back on? I
unplugged it overnight and it's the same.

In the recent past I was able to get the thing to work OK by cleaning the
laser lens and lubing the rails that the laser moves on. It first started
having problems reading DVD Ram discs and then went onto what I described.
Is it just wore out? I have recorded perhaps 200 discs with it. It will no
longer read blank Memorex discs which were the ones it seemd to like best.
Now it will only read Staples supercheap store brand discs.

What's the most reliable brand of basic DVD recorder? Is Lite-On good? I'd
prefer go get one next time that records on both DVD-R and DVD+R. RW and
Ram would be nice too. One with a hard drive would be best I guess but they
cost a lot more.

Thanks.

It occured to me that it crapped out while trying to do a timer recording so
I pushed the program check on the remote and it came back to life. Now it
says NO DISC even though there is one in there! The motor is not turning
the disc.

While you may luck out and get you answer here, I've had much more success
with http://www.avsforum.com go to Main Forums and scroll down to DVD
recorders, there are many Panasonic users there that are very helpful.
