i've just bought a miaMIDI card, and am having trouble choosing a
microphone for it--if i understand correctly, unless i want to invest
in a mixer or a standalone preamp, etc, i need to buy a dynamic
microphone or a battery powered mic--is this correct?

now, second question, are there wireless microphone/headphone headsets
that meet these requirements? what should i buy that is reasonably
good, without overspending and buying something better than the card
itself? i probably don't want to spend more than $200--and i just need
this for working on demos and whatnot--not for final recordings.

The echo mia midi has 2 balanced (6.3 mm stereo jack) line-level inputs
and 2 ditto outputs.

Just plugging in a mic won't do you a lot of good because the mic
signal will be too weak.
Likewise you won't be able to simply plug in a pair of headphones.

At your budget and sound quality not being the main issue, a Behringer
ub802 will give you balanced mic inputs and headphone out at around 50$
on ebay and leave you enough budget for the rest. Taiwanese SM58 clones
can be had at around 50$ including chord and stand- you can get a pair
and do stereo recordings, but expect things to sound mediocre.

Any condenser microphone (with the possible exception of the AKG C1000)
will sound better. If you're recording in a mic-friendly environment
(i.e. not on stage or in the middle of a jumping band), a budget large
diaphragm mic such as the AT2020 or MXL2006 may suit you nicely at
around or just over 100$. This is assuming you'll start out in mono.

Possibly a pair of small-diaphragm condensers can be had at around the
same budget, perhaps the Nady CM-90? I haven't heard these though, so
if I'm suggesting something stupid I'm sure the others in the group
will be happy to flame me.

Good luck!

yeah. (although apparently if you set it to +4 it becomes
unbalanced--or is it the other way around?)

oh, yeah, but i can plug the headphone part into my stereo reciever (i
have 1/4 to rca converters connected the mia to the receiver)

cool--is it a good choice as $50 mixers go, or is it just an exampler
of how cheaply one could be had?

i don't need stereo--i'd rather buy a $100 mono mic than two $50 stereo
mics.

oh so the SM58s are dynamic mics eh?

yeah--all i really need to record at home is a single vocal track. ( i
record my digital piano direct). i might get a separate condensor such
as you suggest, but i think i'm really intersted in a mic/headphone
headset combo. i will be recording a lot of vocals while playing the
piano, and i don't want my posture restricted, especially because i
leap around the keyboard a lot, etc. a wireless headset would be good,
but i might go with a non-wireless in order to get a better quality
mic/headphone.

thanks for your help!
