G3? What to do with it? |
|
|
I just inherited a Mac G-3. I've got a Delta 1010 audio
interface to go in it, but no software on the market
seems like it will work on this system. I *know* that
there was multitrack/sequencing software that ran just
fine on these buggers, but I can't seem to garner any
info on that. I want to turn this into a machine for
songwriting and throwing demos together to give my band
an idea of how I want the songs to go, but I haven't
a clue what software I could use for that combo of
machine and interface.
So, does anyone have a suggestion? It doesn't have to
be new software (and probably won't be), just something
that will probably work with a Mac G-3 and M-Audio
Delta 1010, and be relatively bug free.
Thanks,
---Mikhael...

Is it a beige G3 with a serial port? If so, I happen to have a Logic
Platinum dongle, which will allow you to use Logic 4, a reasonably
powerful sequencer/audio workstation. The nice thing is that this
program is contemporary with the computer, and won't strain the
resources too much. Let me know if you're interested. I would be
happy to either sell it super cheaply, or swap for something you might
have laying around.
Cheers,

It'd be great for Max/MSP messing around or grab an older copy of Bias
Deck and use it as a back-up multitrack.
Take care,

it will run an older version of digital performer.
what should you use it for?
run SpectraFoo on it as a MAS plugin within Digital Performer.
Spectrafoo is a sophisticated metering program. just use the computer
for metering from a stereo feed from another computer.
or if you use a hardware mixer, you could probably use it as a
"sampler" by running DP and using it's Mach 5 thing. |

Nope. It's a blue and white one, no serial ports.

I still have an old Blue and White G3. When it went into retirement I had
a Digidesign AudioMedia 2 card in it running ProTools LE. I got it to work
up to the 32 track upgrade under OS 9.
You can buy AudioMedia 2 cards check on Ebay and download PT LE.

If I could afford a boat, I wouldn't be messing around |
with this particular boat anchor. No, I'm Married With
Children, which not only limits my spending power, but
keeps me fighting to keep from selling what I have got
so far. It's highly annoying, but I don't know any other
way to get what I need to get done.

Yep. That's mine. That's why I mentioned the Delta 1010.
| Quote: | There is a free version of ProTools (5.01) which runs on OS 8.6 (it
might also run on OS 9, I don't know) and handles 8 tracks. On OS 9
there is ProTools LE which handles many more.
|
It seems they have no Pro Tools LE geared towards that
machine any longer. Plus, it looks like they have it
limited to their hardware, from what I see on the website.
Pro Tools Free will run on it, but only does 8 tracks of
audio (I was hoping for 16-20 tracks), and it apparently
will only use DigiDesign hardware.
Logic Audio would have been interesting, but of course
anything to do with MY machine was made by Emagic, which
no longer functiionally exists, and Apple certainly isn't
interested in the G3...
This might be a dead end.

I have an AudioMedia III card laying around somewhere if that would
help the OP. Its one of the very first to hit the shelves way back
in the day so it has the original firmware. Got it at Gelb music
in Redwood City, CA ... |

Well, I already have the Delta 1010 unit, and I will sometimes need |
to record 5-6 tracks simultaneously. If I'm correct, those
Audiomedia cards are stereo I/O, right? They would be fine for
recording up to two tracks, yes.
I looked at the DigiDesign site, and saw only Pro Tools Free for
download. PT LE is a product you have to buy at a store apparently
(it's hard to find any direct info on it).

I don't use a mac (PC only), but a buddy of mine recorded more than a
few songs on a G3 and Delta 1010 combo. He used Cubase VST and OS9.
Perhaps you could find a used copy of VST, or buy the new budget level
Cubase SE for around $100 if you're running OSX? |

Or you might ask on the Logic list becuase some folks do definitely have
old versions with dongles around and occasionally some are for sale.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/
Elsewhere somebody might have an older version of Deck or Digital
Performer or Studio Vision, etc. The DAW-Mac list might offer lots of
good info for you.

Blue and white G3s have an adb port, which is what you need for the
Logic dongle, not the serial port. The serial port is used for midi
interfaces. |

I have a couple of Beige g3's. One of them I turned into a 1gig g4 for
very cheap. Sonnet has a card. It works great and was very worth it.
I also have a 1 gig g4(the real thing) and the beige keeps up with it
perfectly. A g4 (g3 upgraded) running DP2.7 on 9.2.2 is a great system.
I was very happy at that level. It was stable and powerful. All
the PSP stuff works great and that stuff is great.
I am at 4.6 on a 2 gig dual g5 and I still miss the g4 running 9.2.2 and
DP 2.7. 3.0 wasn't too bad but the program just keeps getting more
complex and it's debatable whether it is that much more powerful.
On the other G3 I have DP 2.7 running on 9.2.2 with a tascam 822 card
and I take this system out and do live recordings all the time and it
works great. I have a Tasacam d1000 as the recording board. Records
8trks at a time without a hic-cup TDIF straight in.
Another idea is Mackie Traction. I have this program. It is very cheap
and it is very powerful. I'll bet it would run just fine on a g3. I am
starting to use it more and more because I appreciate it's simplicity
and it's power. great plugins come standard.
g3's are still terrific machines. Patric |
