I am on Comcast in Bucks County north of Philadelphia. I've had a DVR
for about a month (actually the second as the first failed within a
week). The DVR is a Motorola 6412 with a dual tuner. Before that had
three HD boxes in the last year. Yes failures and a poor install.

In playback the DVR sometimes just feezes up. Pressing various buttons
on the remote does nothing. Then the unit awakens from its slumber and
executes all the buttons pressed. The whole problem may last about 45
seconds and happens about once a day randomly.

On occassion the box will start up in a mute mode. Not the TV but the
box. It even says MUTE in the top center of the screen. Nothing
clears this problem except power off/on.

When recording two shows (dual tuner) it is sometimes impossible to
switch (swap) to the other tuner to watch. Again sometimes the unit
works fine other times its power off/on and reset all the recordings.

Comcast tech support is clueless and field service is also.

Anyone elese having any of these problems?

Oh YES Howard - Welcome to the club. I'm on my 4th Motorola DCT6412
Dual-Tuner Phase III DVR. I'm with Cox Cable in Orange County, CA

Do you have a Phase III? Its the newest incarnation of this evil
crummy box. You can tell by the small fan underneath below the
display.

If interested, see the "Log" I kept of its problems during the first
30 days of the fall TV season.

http://www.antivirusyellowpages.com/Motorola_STB_Log.html

My particular "box" also has a HDMI connector on back of it. I assumed
(bad thing to do) that if it was there, it was meant to be used - not
so! Cox only "supports" component for its Hi Def service, not HDMI,
which I understand is superior.

I wrote detailed letters to my local Cox and to the CEO in Atlanta,
and also included the "Log" mentioned above, 2 1/2 weeks ago. NO
RESPONSE at all from anyone at Cox.

Yeah, I am beginning to see the problems you mentioned. The MUTE thing just
started yesterday for the first time (only had this box about 1 month). Let
me know if you find out anything - my cable company tech is clueless. Thanks

Jim

I have similar problems with my SA 8300HD

sometimes the sound just disappears on playback - no mute indication, just
no sound - you must power down and restart it.

also, the box sometimes freezes when playing a recording - again, power down
and reboot

there are SOME recordings that can not be played without crashing the box...
thankfully they can be erased

I think that the boxes are only a tiny bit more powerful than they need to
be to juggle all the real time tasks of running two tuners, streaming to
disk and reading from it simultaneously - sometimes the data streams are a
little bit tougher or something happens a bit too quickly and box crashes,

On the Motorola DCT6412 STP, Various display lights blink at times,
sometimes even TWO at once, besides all the recording & playback
problems. One "cure" I've found for the blinking lights is to just
press the "Play" button once. That stops the blinking, until the next
time.

A few months back, I would look at the "Start" and "Stop" times of
recorded shows. If they look O.K., like "9:00 PM and "10:00 PM," I
would assume the show recorded fine and start to watch it. NOT SO !
Even with the Start & Stop looking O.K., the pic may freeze 3/4 of the
way thru playback and I was unable to "restart" to see the last part
of the show. Recently, I've been using my 3 1/2 yr old analog TiVo as
a "backup" for the most important shows. Its not HD, and only has one
tuner, but at least I get to see a few of the shows my crummy Motorola
junk box doesn't record properly.

Today marks 3 WEEKS since I sent a lengthy complaint letter + "log
data" to Cox Cable and its CEO, Jim Robbins in Atlanta. Still no
response from them whatever and no "fix" in site for this lousy STB.

Jim

keep calling until they do something
I called them six times in one month for the same problem this summer

Finally they got stuff working (for a while) and gave me a month's credit
