Camcorder - Is this common? |
|
|
Thanks in advance.
Just got back from a vacation and had a frustrating problem with my
camcorder. It is a Panasonic DV 800 Mini DV.In the high heat and humidity
of St. Thomas, it would not record. Get an error to the effect of " Dew
Detected - Eject Tape".Ejecting tape and replacing as well as just waiting
it out did not solve the problem and I could not record. This happened this
past summer also. Is this common with camcorders or just mine. Any way to
avoid it? Any brands less prone to this? I am considering replacing this
unit so it would be nice to know. Thanks

Have not had that issue (but then I have not been that far south with
my Sony either). You might consider keeping it in a plastic bag of
some sort with silica gel packs in it to keep the humidity down -- you
can dry them out in an oven and re-use them again (the packs not the
camera ... ) It can be tough when the humidity is 90% + all the time.

I have a Sony TRV-20 and a VX-2000. I've taken them all over the world,
including to very hot and humid climates, and have never had any problems
like you've experienced.

Could it be ....not the humidity.... but condensation....do you keep your |
room nice and cool then take it out into the high heat and humidity ...ever
seen the moisture condense on your Cold Beer ?? Try keeping it in a sealed
bag until it's warmed up to ambient temperateur |

You didn't mention whether you were taking it in and out of
air-conditioned (i.e. cool/dry) environments to the hot, humid
outside? That is the quickest way of causing condensation
(or the temperature change that triggers the "dew sensor")
Dunno that any brands/models are more or less sensitive to this
kind of thing. It may be an annoyance, but you wouldn't want
your camcorder to roll tape with any condensation in the path,
particularly on the head drum.
There are always the new hard-disc camcorders which should
not be sensitive to humidity. |

I did go from inside to outside. However, I would expect that after an hour
outside to adjust ( alot of it with the tape door open to dissipate
condensation) that the problem should go away. There was also no noticeable
dew in the tape mechanism. My suspicion was that it may simply be related to
the heat though it was relatively humid this trip. On the prior occurance,
I don't believe it was that humid.
Thanks Barry |

Your post reminded me of this article I had seen the other day:
http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB113036700399480540-EVSpwqzB_gHENQ3FS7xQMWCMkYc_20061029.html?mod=rss_free
Your model isn't listed there, and it could be totally unrelated to your
problem, but something perhaps to be aware of.

This is normal when condensation builds inside of the camera. Be glad the camera stops functioning.
If it did not, it would fry itself. I used to videotape weddings and had this problem a lot on
Winter days in the snow and going inside a warn church. It is a safety mechanism.

I seem to recall reading something in my Panasonic GS200 manual about a
humidity warning, which implies there is some sensor in the camera pops
up and gets in the way.
I would imagine other camcorders are just as affected by humidity, but
they don't have sensors that shut them off. |
