A simple question about video capture |
|
|
Hi,
I am very new in this area. I have a basic question, I have got a
computer with Fireware port and have got a Sony Hi8 Camcorder. I need
to transfer my analog signals to my camcoder so that I can record those
in VCD/DVD. In order to do this what I requre to have please suggest.
FYI I can spent $100 for this purpose.
Regards

If your camera has a Firewire port you can just connect that to your
computer Firewire port and use Windows Movie Maker to copy acrosss, but
I suspect what you are saying is that your camera only has an analogue
output. If this is the case, you need an analogue input card on your
pc, as the Firewire is no use to you. |

Does your camcoder have a Firewire port?
(Hint: It never hurts to actually mention the
model number.)

Analog signals = capture card.

No, I don't have any firewire port, only output available are s-video
and Composite. I have also got USB 2.0 ports, in terms of quality which
do you think will be the best? BTW, the model number is Sony TRV360. |

Oops! Sorry the USB 2.0 ports are available on my computer along with
Firewire, not on the camcorder. Sorry for the confusion. |

Are you sure you don't have Firewire? It is likely called
"i-link" on a Sony product. This website (and many others)
claim to sell Firewire cables that connect to TRV360...

And your point is what? No point in recommending analog
capture if digital is already available. |

If your computer is running Windows XP, either Home Edition or
Professional, and already has a DVD burner, then a solution for you
would be something along the lines of the ADS Technologies PYRO A/V
Link with Adobe Premiere Elements (API-555), although the cost is
about 50 percent higher than your $100 budget.
It includes a box with S-Video (Y/C) and analog audio input jacks for
connection to your Hi8 camcorder and an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) port for
connection to your computer.
PYRO A/V Link with Premiere Elements
http://www.adstech.com/products/API-555/intro/api555_intro.asp?pid=API-555
There are probably lower priced products on the market which will do
what you want as well, but the ADS API-555 is a good starting point
for any additional research that you may wish to conduct.

I have a Sony TRV360, its Digital 8 with a firewire or Ilink as Sony
calls it. The port is I believe on the front next to the S video port.
Connect your camera to your computer and use movie maker the free
windows program to try things out. You probably need to buy the proper
firewire cable. Believe you need a 4 pin male / 6 pin male cable. I
believe most all comsumer cameras use this same type of cable. |

I think you might not recognize the 1394 - Firewire port on your Sony.
Assuming you've got the model correct, it's a Digital 8, not a Hi-8. Many of
the Sony Digital8's are backward compatible with analog 8/Hi8 tapes, as well
as recording/playing Digital with Video8/Hi8 tapes .
However, be aware that the Firewire port on the camcorder is a 4-pin, which
is skinnier than the 6-pin, which is likely what's going to be on a Firewire
card on the computer. 4 pin into 6-pin cables are readily available. I got
one for $10 at Cheap Guys computers. I've seen them for $30 at Office Depot. |

Well, you should be able to pick up a Sony TRV240 (or some other Dig8 model)
on eBay for around $100 and you can use the Firewire port. What's amazing is
that it actually plays the analog 8/Hi8 tapes better than the analog cam
does. Just make sure it's backwards compatible with the tapes that were
recorded on an analog cam, for some reason some of their Dig8 cams aren't. |

The Canopus ADVC converters are highly-regarded for
their quality, reliability, and compatibility. |
