Hello All

I captured Titanic ( 3 hours 11 min) last night at 352 X 240 NTCS
2.40 bit/sec 48 kHz 16 bit stereo. Tried to make a DVD using Nero Express
6.
Got an error message to the effect that that .mpg was too big. How does one
compress this MPEG1 to a smaller size? Should I have captured at a lower
bit rate?

Thanks in advance
vince

Biz

I'm new at this stuff... what do you use to covert the audio?

Thanks

I read your latter post and you indicated that you are new to this - so
although what I am about to explain is the long way around you will pick up
a few skills on the way.... so give it a go

Get the free program AutoGK (latest version) it will turn your mpeg file
into a DIvx file - I would suggest you set the size at one cd and everything
else auto.

After you get your 700meg avi file if you don't have a DVD player capable of
DivX then you go to the next step.

Obtain the free program VSO DivXToDVD

Select your DivX file and come back in 1 hour and you will have you VIDEO_TS
folder with the program ready to burn as a DVD complete with 20 chapter
points.

If this proves successful I would capture in future at a higher rate if you
have the space. I regularly capture off digital TV movies at the full rate
720 x 576 PAL and follow this process. The avi file is really good quality
(certainly not HD!) and there is no perceptively loss to DVD

WHy would anyone go from an MPEG capture, convert it to divx avi, then
convert it back to mpeg uisng VSOdivx to dvd? If your goal is DVD, then
skip the whole avi step as it is completely unnecessary. Taking a 3 hour
movie and squeezing all the quality out of it to fit it into a 700mb avi
file is ludicrous.

I downloaded BeSweet 1.4 and the GUI .... this program seems to deal with
audio.
I'm trying to fit a 3 hour video on a 4.7GB dvd..... Do I need to download a
plugin

I changed the bitrate to 1.55bit/sec and surprise....the DVD still only
holds a tad
over 3 hours.... so that answered that question. Is this a Nero setting?
Seems like TempGen could stuff 6 hours on a disk.

So he was trying to reduce the size of the mpeg file to allow
NeroVisionExpress to accept the file - it was probably not the size so
much
as the format (352 x 240 NTSC) also note it was a MPEG1 file. MPEG 2 is
optimum for DVD burning.

This format has worked several times at run time < 3 hours. This is a
standard
format on my All in Wonder 7500 card.

I assumed that recording in MPEG 2 would take more DVD space.

Question: Is the 6 hour format, that the stand-alones tout, is a good
(bitwise or whatever)
as good as a 6 hour VHS tape.

Thanks again for any help.

I agree and I normally use ProjectX - demux, edit the subtitle in SubTitle
Workshop and then author the mpeg 2 file and srt subtitle track in DVDLab
Pro. BUT for someone apparently starting out, the fairly automated method I
outlined is easy to do and unless you have actually done it the
"perceptible" loss is not too bad.

I am a professional film editor and sound engineer and I also teach for a
living. So my professional experience has shown that if you take small steps
at first you acquire confidence to move on.

I am guessing that the original writer is mainly interested in content
rather than a talibanesque purity of video quality. As I said try it out and

You asked what I use to convert the audio, I told you. You have to demux
(seperate)the audio from teh video, re-encode the audio, then remux(rejoin)
the new much smaller audio file back together. Leaving the audio as PCM is
what is eating all your space on the disk..That is also how standalone
recorders do it, they use compressed audio, and NOT PCM audio...
I also gave you links to two very good sites with guide s and tutorials
aplenty so you could do some reading...

Biz
I appreciate any and all help.
My reply was precipitated by downloading BeSweet and it's
inability to accept a .mpg file. Therefore i assumed, there is
a plugin or add on that deals with .mpg extensions. I've seen those two
sites,
printed the FAQ's ...but it just takes time to sink in. There are so many
tools
out there and i have a lot that came with the three DVDs i bought in the
last
two years.

Thanks again
