Editing DVDs |
|
|
I have several home authored DVD disks (no copyright issues). I would like
to edit out parts of some scenes and in other cases, move around entire
scenes or parts of scenes (cut and paste). I have access to Nero 6, Roxio
7.5 as well as Windows Movie Maker. Will any of these do the job and, if
not, what should I get to do this.

I can speak for Roxio 7.5. Here are the basic steps.
Create a folder dedicated to your new project. Put everything in this
folder. The idea here is to make everything easy to find - Roxio tends
to save stuff all over the place.
Put your DVD into your computer and use Roxio Capture (unders Tools) to
convert the DVD to an mpg file. Repeat are required if you have more
than one DVD.
Start Videowave, open your mpg file. Use either Storyline view or
Timeline view and select snippets of the file(s) to show in what ever
order you wish. You don't really cut&paste in VideoWave, you select what
portion or portions of an mpg file you want to use. If you want to use
different portions of the same mpg file, just load it again and select
again.
Also in VideoWave you can add text, audio, special effects, transitions,
overlays, etc as you wish. "Burn" the completed video clip to a high
quality mpg file (DVD Authoring, Best). (CineMagic and StoryBuilder are
VideoWave "Wizards" to help you along.)
Repeat to create more video clips are required. Each clip should
represent a chapter of your final production (e.g., each country of a
European tour, one clip for Germany, one for France, etc)
Start DVD Builder, setup your menu theme or create your own. Use 'Add
New Title" to add your video clips to the menu. Each clip becomes a menu
item. Use the Preview button to see how things are coming along. "Burn"
the final production to an .iso file - use a high quality setting.
Do a final check of your finished project by loading the .iso file into
Disc Image Loader (under Extras & Utilites). Play the 'disk' using
CinePlayer.
Use Roxio Disc Copier to burn the .iso to a real DVD. Disc Copier will
perform any compression necessary.
Tip - VideoWave is for cut&paste, special effects, etc. DVD Builder is
for putting existing clips together into a nice menu and burning to DVD
format. DVD Builder will let you do some editing like VideoWave, but
I've always had inconsistent or unexpected results when I tried editing
with DVD Builder.
Tip - Roxio 7.5 is really a suite of about 10 different software
programs. Each one is fairly easy to figure out, but altogether they
take a bit of time to learn. The discussion groups at Roxio are a good
place to ask or look for help.
Tip - Archive.org is some good public domain stuff (video & audio) to
add something extra to the production.
