Which flexible DVD player? |
|
|
I want to get an elderly aunt an inexpensive DVD player for Christmas.
I'm making her a couple of DVD 'movies' from old family photos. But
I'm having trouble finding a player that works properly with my sample
of DVDs.
Yesterday I bought one for £33.99 (60 USD) from Argos, a Bush
DVD2042X1. But with a couple of my DVDs the sound track was distorted.
And it wouldn't play one of the commercial DVDs (Sunday Times 'The
Month') properly. I use mainly DVD-R, either authored directly (with
MemoriesOnTV) or copied from DVD-RW with Nero.
I took the Bush back and changed it for Argos's cheapest model, an
Alba DVD73, £24.75 (43 USD). That plays the 3 or 4 commercial DVDs I
tried (including the ST 'Month'), but gave 'WRONG DISC' on some of my
own DVDs.
Tomorrow I'll take that back too! But can I first get some
recommendations please? I don't expect superb quality and features for
say £35 (65 USD), but I do hope to be able to play DVDs reliably, and
with clean sound. Note that all the test DVDs play fine on my PC and
my own player, a Philips DVD757VR.
Any recommendations for UK available players in that price range would
be much appreciated please.

www.videohelp.com has a list of DVD players and what discs they worked
with. You could sort for DVD players within price range (US $) and
works with DVD-R.
It is a bit unusual for you to run into 2 cheap players that won't
work, just about all DVD players sold nowday will work with DVD-+R as
long as the discs are properly done with VOBs.

Thanks, appreciate the reply. That's a useful site and I'll make more
use of it. But unfortunately the Alba DVD73 isn't included, and there
are very few details on the Bush DVD2042.
Straying a bit from my original question, I thought I understood the
basics of google searching, but maybe I have some fundamental
misunderstanding someone can point out please?
I entered this search target:
alba +dvd73 +review -compare -"add a review"
(That last part was an attempt to filter some of the many shopping
pages.)
But I got many false 'hits. Here's an example:
Winning Craps for the Serious Player Plaza
Alba DVD73 - DVD Plax. From: Amazon UK ... Grey Finish Compact Disc
Player - What Whiffing Sound & Vision ***** Review. From:
Khomeini.co.UK ...
www.touchplaza.com/plaza/search/pg/10/stp/1/nm/Winning+Craps+for+the+Serious+Player
- 69k - Cached - Similar pages
That doesn't appear to even contain 'dvd73'. Any idea why not?
