I have a set of 4 of thier LS mics on here. I have never used them
though.
What has put me off, is that the mics are terminated with a jack, to plug
into a cheap plastic box thing, rather than into an XLR. The box takes a
battery to power the mic. I would prefer to be able to plug them in
normally and phantom them, rather than have a battery to worry about
running
out, in a plastic box that feels like it is going to break easily.

Is that all there is in the box? I have seen other dedicated instrument
mics that had specific eq in the box that interfaced between the mic
and the mic cable.

There is another box, which is used if i want to plug into one of my
Sennheiser belt-pack transmitters.
Maybe i'll email AMT and see if I can wire an XLR on somehow to the mic and
just phantom it normally, and get rid of the plastic boxes.

Not sure about the AMT but there are a few functions athe you need to
package:
1. mic capsule
2. preamp
3. phantom power
4. interface cable/connector

Most of these mics move the preamp out of the mic body to make it smaller.
Therefore, that function and the battery/phantom are in the beltpack box.
Since the wiring is more sensitive they appear not to use standard XLR cable
and connections. I am going to call shure tomorrow but from what I can see,
that is the game. The Beta98 can be used in either format with different
boxes (beta98 vs bet98hc). It is all about the formfactor and application.
