I purchased an Onkyo HT receiver and speakers about a year ago, and
have had no problems up until yesterday. When I am playing a cd
through the receiver from my 15-year-old Sony 5-disc changer, it plays
fine for between 10 seconds and two minutes, then the Onkyo receiver
switches itself into standby.

The troubleshooting section of the manual has only this to say that
seems to be of any relevance:
Problem: The HT-R520 shuts down immediately after being turned on?
Possible Cause: The amp protection system has been activated.

Is there a possibility that my ancient cd player has started to short
out and is turning my receiver off? I've tried plugging a portable cd
player in to the same input on the receiver and it doesn't exhibit this
problem. Has anyone seen this sort of thing before?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I would guess no, it's not the fault of the cd player. I would think the
speakers would be the first place to look, or maybe the speaker cables might
be shorting. Rats or cats chewing on the cables maybe? Normally protection
circuits are built in to save the amp from a short circuit across it's
outputs. Shorting the inputs won't do a thing.

Shorting the inputs to ground wouldn't cause problems.

However, a shorted or leaky cap in the CD player (or numerous other
sorts of faults) could allow a DC offset voltage to appear at the
receiver's inputs. If the preamp/amp is DC coupled, this would cause
an amplified DC offset to appear at the speaker outputs, and *this*
could quite easily trigger the amp's fault-protection circuit and shut
down the system.

Infrasonic or ultrasonic oscillations coming from the CD player might
also trigger a similar shutdown, due to DC-offset or overhead
protection circuitry being activated.

Since the problem is known to go away if the CD player is removed and
a different one is substituted, I have to suspect that the CD player
is significantly involved in the problem.

Definitely check and recheck your speaker wires. Do not allow even one
strand to cross over and touch the other wire.
