HDTV Prices Dropping? |
|
|
Someone recently posted to this Group that said that HDTV (or thin
screen TV's) had dropped substantially and would drop fairly quickly
in the future. However, I lost that post. Would you please repost
it? I am curious as to how much you think prices might drop over the
next few months.
Thanks

Prices for LCD (direct view) and plasma TV have been falling around an
average of 25% to 30% or even more per year for the last several years.
This trend is expected to continue for several more years until the
prices level off. DLP, LCD, LCOS based rear projection TVs have fallen
significantly in price as well, but I don't have a percentage per year
figure on hand.
For example, IIRC, the 50" Panasonic consumer plasma was $8500 USD at
the beginning of 2004. The less expensive current model (TH-50PX50U)
price dropped to $4000 list in August. Still expensive, but a
respectable price drop in a 18 to 20 month period.
We probably won't see major price drops in the next several months for
the brand names. The major LCD and plasma brands all had a round of MSRP
price cuts in the end of August to end of September period to set prices
for the fall and Xmas shopping season. Not likely to see cuts in the
list prices until the Superbowl big TV screen push they do every year.
The B&M stores are likely to have big sale weekends for the Xmas season
however.

Hi Alan,
Thanks a lot for posting this again. I am not sure how I managed to
lose your first post.
So, I take it that you think not much is going to change price-wise
until the Christmas sales or Super bowl weekend. I am not sure whether
I am willing to wait that long or not. We'll see.
Thanks again,
Ron |

Sony KDFE50 A10 |

Hi, my local Sony dealer said he would sell me this set for $2200 in
the southeast. How would this set stack up against a plasma? WHat
are the known problems with this DLP technology?
Thanks |

I received a new Consumer Reports magazine today. There is discussion about
price trends on HDTV sets in there.

My nephew in mid Wisc just bought the E50A10 Sony rear
projection LCD model..... Bulbs cost $177...
Has a sweet vertical viewing angle where brightness is nice.
For a Too low or too high view angle, set can be dim.. Do not use
the vivid 'Torch' mode for brightness.
This unit has very Good OTA and QAM Cable Digital tuners...
Also has analog tuner too.. Set has no pic in Pic...
This is the best selling HDTV set some Sears stores..
Either the 42" or 50"..... Is good bang for the buck.
Set is 720p HD resolution... It Has all the In/Out
ports you will need.... |

1. It's not DLP |
2. There is no rotating mirror
3. It is LCD technology that uses a color wheel and a fan |

This Sony is a native 780p60 display not 720p60 as previously posted. It is
a decent set by all measures, but far from the best display out there if
cost is not a critical measure.

LCD with a color wheel?? No, the Sony SDF-E50A10 as clearly described
on the Sony website is a LCD rear projection (RP) TV with 3 LCDs sources
for the RGB colors. No color wheel needed unlike DLP TVs which have only
1 mirror chip (primarily due to the cost of the chip).
The Sony LCD RPTV is a pretty good HD TV, but because it is LCD has
mediocre minimum black levels and you may see motion smear issues. As
with all RP TV, you have viewing angle limits. The picture is ok if you
sit in the optimum horizontal band, but stand up or sit below the band,
the picture washes out. The other drawback with microdisplay (DLP, LCD,
D-ILA, SXRD) RP TVs is that the bulb will have to be replaced
periodically at a typical cost of $200 to $300 per bulb. Figure
somewhere around every 3 to 5 thousand hours of use, although there is
considerable debate on how long the bulbs really last.
Personally, I seriously considered getting a RP TVs as they are
cheaper per inch of big screen size than the flat panels. But I ended up
getting a 42" HD Panasonic plasma because I found I much preferred the
picture quality of the Panny plasma. But if you want a 50+" wide screen,
the RP TVs are still much less expensive (for now).

Hi Again Alan,
I thought you might be interested to know that "Consumer Reports" s
predicting that 37" and larger direct LCD and rear projection DLP
HDTV's could drop in price by $500 or more by spring 2006 and possibly
more by the end of 2006.

It's quite simple. I just bought a 42" Panasonic Plasma, therefore
prices will drop substantially.
I'll report back when I buy a new computer and car so everyone can save
money. =\

I'm looking at the same unit, but the EDTV version. Prices will drop even
more when I buy. ;) |
