HDMI Connection Question |
|
|
What's the best way for me to connect an HDMI DVD player to my HDTV and
my non-HDMI switching receiver? The issue is the audio path. I can
connect the DVD to the HDTV with HDMI, then take the digital audio
output from the HDTV and run it into the receiver. Advantage would be
simplicity of connection - I wouldn't have to do any input switching on
the receiver to listen to any 5.1 sound source w/the TV. The other
method is that I could connect the DVD to the HDTV with HDMI, then run
the optical digital audio out from the DVD player directly to the
receiver.
My concern is A/V sync - am I going to get out of sync with one or both
of these solutions?
thanks,
Brad Anders

In my setup I run the video out from my DVD player directly to the TV, and
the digital audio out from my DVD player directly to my receiver. It makes
sense to me in that I am not introducing any unnecessary electronics into
the audio path.

Brad, the best video connection you can run is HDMI from your DVD |
player to your HDTV, but in order to get 5.1 surround, you'll have to
run digital audio from the DVD directly into the receiver. I sincerely
doubt you'll get 5.1 out of your HDMI from your HDTV to your receiver.
There's every possibility you'll end up with A/V sync problems. Many
new receivers on the market today can compensate for the sync issue.
If your receiver is fairly new, you might want to check to see if you
can do this. |

Then Toslink is better than coax. Optical cable is pretty well immune
from external interference.
