I have DirecTV HD service and have been thinking of getting
a HD DirecTV HD TiVo.

My main purpose is that I work a lot and miss a lot of shows
that I want to see. I would like to be able to record those
shows on the HD TiVo and then download them to my laptop so I
can watch them at lunch at work.

I've been looking around at some of the "hack" sites and are
a little confused at what I see. (I'm not exactly a computer
dummy, but most of the sites I've seen are a little "vague" as
to what one can and can't do with a TiVo)

My question is...

If I get a DirecTV HD TiVo, can I "modify" it to so that I can
download shows to my laptop and if so, what exactly would I need
to do that.

I would appreciate any and all help with this. Any links to any
great WWW sites would also be appreciated.

hacking your tivo and killing you tivo

I know, I know. You can hardly wait until TIVO and it's pathetic army
of Rumpswabs is crushed by the competition.

I hear ya, me too.

Soon enough. Don't worry.

won't be dead. at the worst a directivo would just stop getting software
upgrades, but a directv tivo receives it guide data fromthe sat., so it will
work even if tivo shuts down, as long as directv wants. as i've mentioned,
directv would be insane to try to cut off its subscribers tivo's. there are
millions out there. there's no way. and "obsolete" is defined by the user.
if you think you want it, get it. you'll see new products out in a year or
two, or more that you might also like. with all the hype about things that
are "coming soon", but won't actually be here for a while, you'd get tired
of waiting for them and end up wishing you had the tivo.
