[FROM TIVOTODAY.COM]

The New York Times this morning carries SAUL HANSELL'S story about
Yahoo and TiVo making moves to bring their services and customers
closer together. Could this be the first evidence of an impending
merger? Possibly it could, and opinions abound across the web.
Russell Shaw at ZDNet speculates: "I wonder if this is a precursor to,
say, Yahoo! buying TiVo? I believe that TiVo will sell, and both Google
and Yahoo! would be interested.
In another ZDNet piece, Michael Singer (of CNET News.com) points out
that "Alviso, Calif.-based TiVo has been in talks with several search
engine companies including Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo to build a new
service that would let consumers search for videos on the Web and then
watch them on their television sets."
Tom Rogers, CEO of TiVo, did not disclose the terms of this deal,
however they are said at this stage, to involve more cross promotion
than cash. Essentially this technical partnership between Yahoo and
TiVo allows TiVo owners to select any program from the Yahoo TV
listings and check a box to automatically have their TiVo record the
program in question. This is accomplished through the TiVo's modem or
(on newer TiVo's) the network connection.

It's the standard way Tivo's get information for the guide if you don't

have a net connection. No big deal except that you need to schedule
things farther in advance so your box will get the scheduled in time.

Aw, Sean, you have a 36 hour wait? Must suck to be stuck on dialup.
Users on broadband have a 15 minute window.

And sure, if you're home you can schedule it right there. But some
people actually have lives and leave the house, even go away for
extended periods, and would like to be able to record things to watch
when they get home.

Plus Yahoo's TV area is popular and has multiple ways to find
listings, discussions, etc, and now you can trigger recordings from
all of those.

Yeah, but I don't think I'd want to download videos across it!

I did this last night and it took about 30 minutes to go through. 36
hours would be if you were on dial-up.

Really, this is nothing new from a tech perspective. This has long
been doable with TiVo.com.

What is "nice" about it is that many people, like me, log into Yahoo
daily to check things...news, mail, stock, weather, etc... It's
usually something we're already logged into, or will log into when we
travel.

Now, from where we are on a regular basis, we can easily select shows
for our TiVo. It's very much like when Yahoo added Fandango links to
their movie section. The integration doesn't enable anything new, it
just makes it easier and a better experience.

It's a win-win-win, but not that big of a deal.

Some of us leave the couch in Mommy's basement and go to work and live our
lives.

I have Sean killfiled (and so should everyone else) so I don't see his
spew, but I still keep seeing it when others quote him in the
arguments he stirs up.

Please, don't give him the satisfaction of a response. Just add his
address to your newsreader's kill feature and never be bothered again.

Or, just don't respnd to him, which is what he wants you to do..
