If you're looking for a good program to use and want to save
money, you might have a look at the open source (free) GIMP.

I haven't seen PhotoImpact. I've seen Paintshop Pro and it
struck me as an outstanding photo editor, very possibly better
than the GIMP. But the GIMP already has more functionality
than the vast majority of photographer's need, and it's free. A
better program might just be overkill for you.

When I bought PI, it was just no contest, Paintshop wasn't
even in the running. That was PI v5, and now they are up to
v8 (or even v10?), with a zillion bells and whisles. Still use v5.

Anyway I am very pleased with PI, but haven't the faintest
idea if PSP ever caught up.

My advice to anyone starting out is NOT be afraid to get a complex
chunk of software BUT only learn to do a couple of simple tasks with
it.

On that subject, newest is not always best, at least for some tasks. I have
both PhotoImpact 10 and PS Elements 2, but for many pictures (eBay stuff,
snaps for emailing etc.) I use a clunky old copy of PhotoImpact 4! It is
terrific for just basic resizing, exposure control, adding text etc. But if
I need Exif information, complicated layers, levels etc. I use Elements, and
am 'playing' with PI 10.

So if you see an old version of something being given away free on a
magazine CD, grab it, don't dismiss it as 'outdated'.
