Is there a way of editing a subtitle text sub or srt to make it larger on a
conventional standalone dvd player that accepts sub or srt?

If you are relying on the DVD player to display the sub or srt files I
believe it is a function of the firmware of the DVD player that determines
the font and size. I am speaking of my experience with a 700mg avi file with
the sub file on the disk as well.
When I recently updated the firmware of my DVD player the font changed. It
had no effect of course on burnt in subtitles on DVD disks or DivX files.
