Convert VCD to DVD Possible? |
|
|
I've got a Video CD which I made from an AVI file. I find that it plays
on my pc, but not on my DVD player.
I no longer have the AVI file. Is it possible to take the VCD and
convert it into a DVD?
TIA

How are the video files on your "Video CD" described, in
GSpot? Is it a true VCD? What is the image size ???x???
What is the audio? Is it MPEG1 ?

You should be able to do this provided the VCD is in pretty good shape, and
assuming the VCD is in the standard format. In fact you should be able to
do it with no loss of video quality, and imperceptible loss in audio quality.
The steps of one method include
Extract mpeg from VCD (vcdgear can do this)
Demultiplex mpeg into audio and video streams (Tmpgenc can do this)
Convert audio to mp2 with 48khz sampling. Most likely the current sample
rate is 44.1khz.
You could simply reencode the VCD and the audio stream to a new DVD compatible
format using Tmpgenc. Resist the temptation to do that. You'll lose some
video quality and VCD has little to spare.
Feed audio and video streams to your favorite (probably not free) authoring
tool. Add menus, chapter marks or whatever, then generate vobs. Feed vobs
to DVD burning software and generate DVD.
Incidentally you could probably start making all of your VCDs with 48khz
sample rate. They'll probably play anywhere you were playing those
44.1khz VCDs.

If the "VCD" is in the standard format, TMPGEnc DVD Author
(TDA) will accept it as it is, and convert the audio sample rate. But
that is a very big IF, now a days. TDA has no video encoder and
should not effect the video quality, although playing video at full
screen that was as small as standard VCD may appear somewhat
degraded.

Thanks guys. When I look at the folders in Explorer I wouldn't know
where to start. There are five folders, each one having one or more
files. Can't see anything called mpeg. |

If I recall, then the mpeg isn't called that on VCD, might be called
*something*.dat, look for a file about 700,000 large. Rename it to .mpeg. |

Open the folder on the disc named MPEGAV, copy the DAT file to your HDD then
rename with an MPG extension. You can then play it on PC or use burning
software, (Nero, DVD Santa etc.), to burn it to DVD.

Thanks for that. I've identified it now. Found I can burn it with |
software I already had, "AVI DivX to DVD SVCD VCD Converter" |

The standard VCD is MPEG 1 352x240/352x288 even if
it is using the .dat extension. It is always a good idea to move
any video files, you want to work on, to your hard drive first.
You can just use windows explorer to copy the files to a temp.
folder. You would then rename them with the .mpg extension.

YES and NO. It's better to copy to hard drive or convert from .DAT to
..MPG, but you do not have to.
And even TDA (or just about all authors) can read from CD directly, but
why wasting time and DVD to convert from VCD -> DVD? Or
- One of the good reasons to put VCD onto DVD to be able to put more VCD
(between 7-10 VCDs depending on the size) onto single DVD. But reading from
VCD disc (directly) which means you will have to have 7-10 DVDs in order to
hold 7-10 VCD discs for author to read and converting to DVD.
- TDA can read/import .DAT *but* by default it won't look for .DAT nor ..VOB,
so you will have to tell it to look and load *.DAT |

Dat files are not exactly mpeg format and simply renaming them does not
make them valid mpeg files. Some editing software chokes on files copied
in this way. Apparently TDA has no issue with them.

I didn't mean to imply that .dat files were exactly .mpg.
In fact, as I tried to point out in earlier posts above, not
all VCD are the same. TDA has no issue with many of
them ( so it's worth a try) but it can't do them all.
www.digitalfaq.com recommends using ISOBuster to
extract the MPEG data from VCDs before using TDA
to author a new DVD. If it fails trying it directly into
TDA then I would try VideoReDo Plus, might work,
and if that fails; ISO Buster. The two of three I've
done all worked with just TDA.
