I have just purchased a Pioneer DVR-RT401-S combo DVD and VHS
player/recorder. The instruction manual is written for *very*
experienced users; but I am new at this sort of thing. The setup menu
offers two choices for "New disc format": VR or Video. Which one should
I choose so as to create DVDs which are most compatible with other (and
older) DVD players?

The manual also refers (without explanation) to "ver. 1.1/1.2" discs.
Need I concern myself with this? How does one tell what version a disc
is?

Do any of you know of a good website that discusses and clarifies such
arcane matters?

Thanks.

I had fun at PC world with those version numbers. Most of the staff
just looked at me like I was an idiot for even thinking that there
were different versions
"They're just dvds"

It seems the version numbers are something to with the speed of the
discs. So a higher version number is likely to be a higher speed disc.
May be wrong but possible and it is an easy way to think of it. Some
websites tell you version numbers when you look at in depth info on
discs you're buying.

Now, when I had a player that recorded VR the first thing I noticed
was it said it was fully compatible with players which had the symbol
VR over the video icon, so it does look like the player has to be
compatible and to be honest I had so many problems with the machine
(Not a pioneer) I sent it back before it mattered. I don't think I've
seen that symbol on any machine apart from the recorder I bought.

On my machine VR and video choice was only offered on RW discs. The
difference was that where video mode was basically the same as that
offered on write once discs the VR mode had lots of little touches,
like being able to delete a recording made between two other
recordings and gain space back. There was quite a bit you could do to
it that video format doesn't allow.

I would say use VR for recordings you watch on the machine they're
recorded on and video for recordings to be watched on another machine,
unless you KNOW the others are compatible.

I'm sure there will be some folks who will be able to give you better
and more detailed info but at least you have something to go on :O)

Here is a web site that might help:
http://www.eventdv.net/Articles/PrintArticle.aspx?ArticleID=5449

I believe that DVD-VR format was for digital video camera's and tabel top
DVD recorders that didn't have a hard drive. -VR format would record
directly to a disc without needing software to compile an image file and
then write the disc.
