Hello,

a friend has an 'old' Toshiba Sattelite with a 1Ghz celeron/256MB RAM
and a 16MB Trident videocard.

When he tries to watch a DVD with the windows XP builtin media player 9
the frames are verry choppy and less then enjoyable to watch.

Can somebody suggest good alternative software wich is less fanatic
about CPU and RAM ressources wicch results in smoother playback?

thanks in advance for any tweaks, software titles or other suggestions.

rmc

VLC media player; http:\\www.videolan.org
Just make sure you set the display to 16-bit colours.

He should have plenty enough horsepower to play DVDs on his laptop.
Ascertain that DMA is enabled for the IDE channel that the DVD drive is
attached to.

"Media Player Classic" would be worth a try IMH
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/mpc2kxp6486.zip?downloa

It's a single file that runs without installation. It has everythin
built in that is required to playback a DVD

The old Toshiba Satellites often used Zoomed Video (ZV), if
so; you can pick-up a Gateway/Kingmax PC Card w/ZV-DVD
Dangle for ~$20. Google "ZV DVD card" then click on the
"Product search results" (or Froogle directly.)

Luck;
Ken
