Don't know if anyone here follows auctions on eBay but this one is a
classic.

Seller with zero (0) feedback offers two 61" Pioneer Plasma displays (rrp is
about $18k) in separate auctions just minutes apart. Here are the details
of the first one.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5825085728&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Interested in buying one of these babies for the right price I emailed the
seller via ebay asking for a few details like - do I get a tax invoice, why
isn't insurance offered on the transport etc.
Got a reply which wasn't posted on the auction as most ebayers do to avoid
the need to answer the question again and again.

Anyhow, within hours of the auction closing I received a message via my ebay
messages from another ebay member (not the seller) advising me that the
winner of the auction for the second item had backed out of the deal and the
item was now been offered to me at my last highest bid price. The message
said to contact the seller directly via email and NOT through the normal
ebay process. Curious to see what would eventuate I contacted the "seller"
as instructed who insisted on me providing information which is not required
under ebay's normal conditions. I wrote back asking for their details.
Remember they said they would provide a tax invoice with the goods, so I
asked for their ABN. Got a reply insisting on my personal details but they
didn't answer the question re the ABN.

Smelling a rat I declined to send them any information. Just as well - a
day after the auction closed they are no longer a registered user.

Was the seller running a scam? I think so, but what do you think?

Cheers,
Alan

Oldest scam in the book.

duh

I wouldn't trust anyone that doesn't accept paypal or pickup (big ticket
stuff). Secondly, warranty issues are something to be concerned with as many
will tell you to return to vendor.

Don't worry I did. Both the seller and the third party go between.
This is the sort of trading members don't need on eBay.

Got an e-mail from one of the buyers in the auction. Apparently the seller
is about to or has already been charged by the Police. Hope they get done
like a dinner.

Cheers,
Alan
