Receiver Upgrade $1000-$1500 mark (Wait for HD-DVD?) |
|
|
I am looking to upgrade my Sony STRDE-597 for a newer amp.
I am looking to pay under $1000, but can look at more expensive options
as I can get many brands cheaper through work (Onkyo, Yamaha, Marantz,
etc) so for these, up to $1500.
At this point I want as many features but with real performance.
Some of the models I have been looking at:
Onkyo TX-SR603
Denon AVR-2105
Yamaha RXV-757
Yamaha RXV-757
I looked at the NAD's but failed to get enough info to draw me toward
them.
I have also heard good things about marantz, but I can't seem to find
our pricing structure for these, and I'd rather get a $1300 amp for
under a grand than pay retail for a fairly good one...
Can anyone cast some light on these models or any other options
please...
Will the next generation of DVD's (BluRay / HD-DVD) will there be new
audio formats I should be aware of? I'd hate to buy now and be out of
date for the next generation scheduled for next year...

Forget the big, bulky bloke machines. Go a digital amp like the
Philips DFR9000. You can pick one up from Harvey Norman for just pver
a grand and they've got all the connections you could ask for.

Check out the Cambridge Audio Azur 540R receivers, they don't have all
the bells and whistles that the brands you mentioned have, but in terms
of sound they are awesome. They retail for $1099 but my mate picked one
up for $900, it walks all over my yamaha rx-v550 for music
reproduction. You will find the power ratings on the azur540r are
measured with all speakers operating compared to brands like yamaha
that measure power ratings individually for each channel, so the
azur540r easily out powers my receiver.

if you like the yamahas you can easily haggle the rx-v1500 down to $1500 or
less. i got mine a few months ago for $1450. got it from a local hi-fi store
in brisbane btw, but heard people have done it at HN's. |

Dolby will be releasing Tru Dolby HD and DTS will be releasing DTS HD on
Blu ray and HD-DVD. These audio formats are improved versions of SACD
and DVD-Audio formats are require upto 27 MBPS bandwidth (huge). Dolby
has stated that this will only be available through HDMI 1.3.
The specification for HDMI 1.3 has not even been finalised yet. It
will take some time before the spec is finalised and manufacturers can
start building it into their products and when they do I am sure they
will be a little pricy.
I would getting a cheap upgrade now to get you through 12-18months and
then upgrade to a receiver with HDMI 1.3. The sony db795 is excellent
value at $650 at following link
http://www.cabramattahifi.com.au/store/product_info.php?cPath=157_191&products_id=546.
